Abstract

The present invention generally relates to the field of dietary therapies for treating disorders associated with mitochondrial dysfunction, including epilepsy.

Claims (33)

1. A method for treatment of a disease associated with mitochondria dysfunction, the method comprising administering to an individual having the disease a composition comprising an effective amount of a combination of decanoic acid and octanoic acid having a weight ratio of the decanoic acid to the octanoic acid of at least 2:1.

2. The method according to claim 1 wherein the disease is selected from the group consisting of epilepsy, diabetes, Parkinson's disease, dementias including Alzheimer's disease, and an inborn error of mitochondrial function.

3. The method according to claim 2 wherein the treatment of epilepsy includes control of seizures.

4. A method of affecting at least one characteristic selected from the group consisting of cellular content of mitochondria, cellular function of mitochondria, cellular availability of mitochondria, and modulating cellular energy supply of a cell, the method comprising administering to the cell a composition comprising an effective amount of a combination of decanoic acid and octanoic acid having a weight ratio of the decanoic acid to the octanoic acid of at least 2:1.

5. The method according to claim 1 in which a dosage of about 5 g/l to 500 g/l of the decanoic acid is administered to the individual per day.

6. The method according to claim 1 wherein the decanoic acid is greater than 50% of the total weight of fatty acid content of the composition.

7. The method according to claim 1 wherein the composition is substantially free from any other saturated fatty acid.

8. The method according to claim 1 wherein the composition is substantially free from mono- and poly-unsaturated fatty acids.

9. The method according to claim 1 wherein the weight ratio of the decanoic acid to the octanoic acid is at least 3:1.

10. The method according to claim 1 wherein the weight ratio of the decanoic acid to the octanoic acid is at least 4:1.

11. The method according to claim 1 wherein the weight ratio of the decanoic acid to the octanoic acid is at least 5:1.

12. The method according to claim 1 wherein the weight ratio of the decanoic acid to the octanoic acid is at least 6:1.

13. The method according to claim 1 wherein the weight ratio of the decanoic acid to the octanoic acid is at least 9:1.

14. The method according to claim 1 wherein the weight ratio of the decanoic acid to the octanoic acid is at least 10:1.

15. The method according to claim 1 wherein the weight ratio of the decanoic acid to the octanoic acid is at least 20:1.

16. The method according to claim 1 wherein the decanoic acid is at least 60% of the total weight of fatty acid content of the composition.

17. The method according to claim 1 wherein the decanoic acid is at least 70% of the total weight of fatty acid content of the composition.

18. The method according to claim 1 wherein the decanoic acid is at least 80% of the total weight of fatty acid content of the composition.

19. The method according to claim 1 wherein the decanoic acid is at least 90% of the total weight of fatty acid content.

20. The method according to claim 1 wherein the composition has an energy density of 2500 to 3100 kJ per 100 g dry mass.

21. The method according to claim 1 wherein the composition has an energy density of 2540 to 3080 kJ per 100 g dry mass.

22. The method according to claim 1 wherein the composition has a ketogenic ratio from 2.7:1 to 3.4:1.

23. The method according to claim 1 wherein the composition comprises the octanoic acid in an amount less than 10 wt. %.

24. The method according to claim 1 wherein the composition comprises 33-44 g total saturated fatty acids per 100 g lipids.

25. The method according to claim 1 wherein the composition comprises 30-37 g of the decanoic acid per 100 g lipids.

26. The method according to claim 1 wherein the composition comprises coconut oil or palm oil as 70-90 wt. % of total lipids.

27. The method according to claim 1 wherein the composition comprises 5-8.2 g carbohydrates per 100 g dry mass of the composition.

28. The method according to claim 1 wherein the composition comprises 14.2-16.2 g protein per 100 g dry mass of the composition.

29. The method according to claim 28 wherein 40-80 wt. % of the protein is alpha-lactalbumin.

30. The method according to claim 1 wherein the composition comprises 65-72 g lipids per 100 g dry mass of the composition.

31. The method according to claim 1 wherein the composition is administered to the individual daily for at least six days.

32. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the decanoic acid is at least 99% of the total weight of fatty acid content of the composition.

33. The method according to claim 4 , wherein the decanoic acid is at least 99% of the total weight of fatty acid content of the composition.
