Abstract

A capsule for use in a brewing device is provided, comprising a body part, which defines a cavity and which has a flange, a lid which is attached to the flange and tea material enclosed within the capsule, characterized in that the shape of the flange is defined by two intersecting circular arcs when viewed from above. A brewing device which comprises a capsule holder for receiving the capsule is also provided, the capsule holder comprising a sidewall which is circular when viewed from above and which has an upper rim, a shelf on at least part of the inside of the sidewall, a filter and an openable and closable passage on the opposite side of the filter from the upper rim. A method of preparing a tea-based beverage in the brewing device using the capsule is also provided.

Claims (28)

1. A capsule for use in a brewing device having a capsule holder with a first radius, the capsule comprising:

a body part defining a cavity and comprising a flange;

a lid attached to the flange; and

tea material enclosed within the capsule;

wherein the flange is defined by two intersecting circular arcs, each having a radius R substantially equal to the first radius, thereby defining a shape of the flange;

wherein the flange has a longest diameter and a shortest diameter;

wherein a ratio of the longest diameter to the shortest diameter is between 1.2:1 and 1.5:1, inclusive;

wherein the lid is defined by two intersecting circular arcs with truncated ends, thereby defining a shape of the lid;

wherein the shape of the lid substantially matches the shape of the flange; and

wherein the flange and the shape of the capsule cooperate with the brewing device in use to support the capsule within the capsule holder of the brewing device.

2. The capsule according to claim 1 , wherein the cavity has a generally circular cross-section.

3. The capsule according to claim 1 , wherein the cavity has a volume of about 10 to about 24 cm 3 .

4. The capsule according to claim 1 , wherein the cavity has a depth of about 10 to about 20 mm and a diameter of about 30 to about 45 mm.

5. The capsule according to claim 1 , wherein the lid has a length between the two truncated ends of about 47 to about 58 mm, and a maximum width of about 45 to about 50 mm.

6. The capsule according to claim 1 , wherein the lid comprises a laminate of aluminium foil and polyethylene.

7. The capsule according to claim 1 , wherein the circular arcs have substantially the same radius as a capsule holder in the brewing device with which the capsule operates in a cooperative arrangement.

8. A multipack containing a plurality of capsules according to claim 1 .

9. The capsule according to claim 1 , wherein the lid comprises a first plurality of perforations, the first plurality of perforations configured to facilitate introduction of water into the cavity through the lid, removal of the water from the cavity through the lid, and removal of tea from the cavity through the lid.

10. The capsule according to claim 9 , wherein the first plurality of perforations are arranged in a curve around the lid, the curve defining a first end and a second end with a non-perforated portion in between.

11. The capsule according to claim 10 , wherein the lid comprises a second plurality of perforations, the second plurality of perforations arranged along a first side of the lid; and

wherein the first plurality of perforations are arranged along a second side of the lid opposite the first side of the lid and separate from the first plurality of perforations.

12. A capsule for use in a brewing device, the capsule comprising:

a body part defining a cavity and comprising a non-circular flange; and

a lid coupled to the non-circular flange, the lid comprising a first plurality of perforations configured to facilitate introduction of water into the cavity through the lid, removal of the water from the cavity through the lid, and removal of tea from the cavity through the lid;

wherein the non-circular flange supports the capsule within a capsule holder of the brewing device when the tea is removed from the cavity through the lid, the capsule holder having a first radius; and

wherein the non-circular flange is defined by two intersecting circular arcs, each having a radius R substantially equal to the first radius.

13. The capsule according to claim 12 , wherein the lid comprises a second plurality of perforations, the second plurality of perforations arranged along a first side of the lid; and

wherein the first plurality of perforations are arranged along a second side of the lid opposite the first side of the lid and separate from the first plurality of perforations.
