Abstract

A flexible collet on a subterranean tool has sacrificial soft components to protect seal bores through which the collets have to compress to get through. The sacrificial components can be replaced when the tool is removed to the surface. In one embodiment, threaded fasteners are used alone or with washers for height adjustment such that the heads of the fasteners which are softer than the seal bore material ride on the seal bore and take the wear. The tool can ultimately be used to latch into shifting sleeves to move such sleeves to open or close wall ports. Alternatively axial ridges with beveled profile ends can be used or rolling members such as wheels or balls can be used to keep sharp edges off the seal bore. EDM method can be used to create multiple fingers with an axial ridge profile and rounded end transitions.

Claims (39)

1. A collet assembly for operating a subterranean tool after flexing inwardly through a bore, comprising:

a tubular mandrel having opposed ends and a plurality of slots to define a plurality of spaced fingers supported between said opposed ends of said mandrel, said fingers having a raised exterior segment having opposed axial edges and said raised exterior segment further comprises at least one outer surface and a profile defined by a discontinuity in said outer surface for selective engagement of the subterranean tool;

at least one sacrificial member adjacent to at least one of said opposed axial edges in an axially spaced location from said profile and radially extending beyond said at least one outer surface and radially removable through said at least one outer surface; said at least one outer surface comprises a plurality of outer surfaces; said sacrificial member is mounted in a beveled said outer surface adjacent to at least one outermost surface of said plurality of outer surfaces which comprises said profile.

2. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein:

said sacrificial member is threaded.

3. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein:

said sacrificial member is made of a softer material than the bore.

4. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein:

said beveled surface comprises a hole to retain said sacrificial member.

5. The assembly of claim 4 , wherein:

said hole is threaded.

6. The assembly of claim 5 , wherein:

said sacrificial member comprises at least one fastener.

7. The assembly of claim 6 , wherein:

said fastener comprises a head that extends radially beyond said outermost surface.

8. The assembly of claim 7 , wherein:

said head keeping said opposed edges from contacting the bore.

9. The assembly of claim 8 , further comprising:

at least one spacer mounted with said fastener to control the desired radial extension of said head.

10. The assembly of claim 8 , wherein:

said fastener made of a softer material than the bore.

11. The assembly of claim 10 , wherein:

said at least one fastener comprises a plurality of fasteners disposed adjacent said opposed axial edges on discrete said beveled outer surfaces.

12. The assembly of claim 4 , wherein:

said sacrificial member is secured to said hole with adhesive.

13. The assembly of claim 4 , wherein:

said sacrificial member is secured to said hole with an interference fit.

14. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein:

said sacrificial member comprises at least one fastener.

15. The assembly of claim 14 , wherein:

said fastener comprises a head that extends radially beyond said outermost surface.

16. The assembly of claim 15 , wherein:

said head keeping said opposed edges from contacting the bore.

17. The assembly of claim 16 , further comprising:

at least one spacer mounted with said fastener to control the desired radial extension of said head.

18. The assembly of claim 17 , wherein:

said fastener made of a softer material than the bore.

19. The assembly of claim 18 , wherein:

said at least one fastener comprises a plurality of fasteners disposed adjacent said opposed axial edges on discrete beveled surfaces.
