Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure include compositions for use in enhanced oil recovery, and methods of using the compositions for recovering oil. Compositions of the present disclosure include a nonionic, non-emulsifying surfactant having a CO 2 -philicity in a range of about 1.5 to about 5.0, carbon dioxide in a liquid phase or supercritical phase, and water, where the nonionic, non-emulsifying surfactant promotes a formation of a stable foam formed of carbon dioxide and water.

Claims (34)

1. A method for recovering oil from a reservoir formation that is penetrated by at least one injection well and one production well, comprising:

selecting a nonionic, non-emulsifying surfactant having a CO 2 -philicity in a range of about 1.5 to about 5.0,

where the nonionic, non-emulsifying surfactant has a formula:

RO—(CR 1 R 2 CR 3 R 4 O) x (C 2 H 4 O) y —H

where

R is selected from the group of branched alkyl, cyclic alkyl, and groups having 3 to 11 carbon atoms;

R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , and R 4 are each independently selected from the group of H, branched alkyl, linear alkyl, cyclic alkyl, or alkaryl groups having 1 to 6 carbon atoms; with the proviso that one or more of the following apply: that R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , and R 4 cannot all be H, the sum of carbon atoms in R 1 +R 2 +R 3 +R 4 is less than or equal to about 8;

x is from 1.5 to 11 inclusive when the sum of carbon atoms in R 1 +R 2 +R 3 +R 4 is equal to 1;

x is an integer from 1 to 2 inclusive when the sum of carbon atoms in R 1 +R 2 +R 3 +R 4 is equal to 2 to 8; and

y is an integer from 6 to 25 inclusive;

forming a stable foam of carbon dioxide and water in the reservoir formation with the nonionic, non-emulsifying surfactant;

lowering a viscosity of oil in the reservoir formation; and

producing oil having the lowered viscosity from the reservoir formation.

2. The method of claim 1 , where forming the stable foam includes injecting the surfactant with at least one of carbon dioxide and water into the reservoir formation via the injection well.

3. The method of claim 2 , where injecting the surfactant includes injecting the surfactant with carbon dioxide into the reservoir formation, where the reservoir formation contains water.

4. The method of claim 2 , where injecting the surfactant with at least one of carbon dioxide and water into the reservoir formation includes injecting the surfactant with water into the reservoir formation; and

injecting carbon dioxide into the reservoir formation after injecting the surfactant with water into the reservoir formation.

5. The method of claim 2 , where injecting the surfactant with at least one of carbon dioxide and water into the reservoir formation includes injecting the surfactant with water and carbon dioxide into the reservoir formation, where the surfactant is included in at least one of the carbon dioxide and the water.

6. The method of claim 1 , where the nonionic, non-emulsifying surfactant is selected from the group including (C 8 H 17 O)—(C 3 H 6 O) 5 —(C 2 H 4 O) 9 —H, (C 8 H 17 O)—(C 3 H 6 O) 5 —(C 2 H 4 O) 11 —H, (C 8 H 17 O)—(C 3 H 6 O) 9 —(C 2 H 4 O) 9 —H, (C 6 H 13 O)—(C 3 H 6 O) 5 —(C 2 H 4 O) 11 —H, (C 6 H 13 O)—(C 3 H 6 O) 5 —(C 2 H 4 O) 13 —H, (C 9 H 19 O)—(C 3 H 6 O) 4 —(C 2 H 4 O) 8 —H, and mixtures thereof.

7. The method of claim 1 , where a water phase of the stable foam formed of carbon dioxide and water further includes at least one additive selected from a group consisting of corrosion inhibitors, co-surfactants, scale inhibitors, and mixtures thereof.

8. The method of claim 1 , where the surfactant has an hydrophilic-lipophilic balance of less than about 14.

9. The method of claim 8 , where selecting the non-emulsifying, nonionic surfactant includes selecting the surfactant with a cloud point in a range of about a temperature of the reservoir formation to about 30° C. above the temperature of the reservoir formation.

10. A method for recovering oil from a reservoir formation that is penetrated by at least one injection well and one production well, comprising:

selecting a nonionic, non-emulsifying surfactant having a CO 2 -philicity in a range of about 1.5 to about 5.0, where the nonionic, non-emulsifying surfactant has a formula:

RO—(CR 1 R 2 CR 3 R 4 O) x (C 2 H 4 O) y —H

where

R is a linear alkyl group having 3 to 6 carbon atoms;

R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , and R 4 are each independently selected from the group of H, branched alkyl, linear alkyl, cyclic alkyl, or alkaryl groups having 1 to 6 carbon atoms; with the proviso that one or more of the following apply: that R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , and R 4 cannot all be H, the sum of carbon atoms in R 1 +R 2 +R 3 +R 4 is less than or equal to about 8;

x is from 4 to 11 inclusive when the sum of carbon atoms in R 1 +R 2 +R 3 +R 4 is equal to 1;

x is an integer from 1 to 2 inclusive when the sum of carbon atoms in R 1 +R 2 +R 3 +R 4 is equal to 2 to 8; and

y is an integer from 6 to 25 inclusive;

forming a stable foam of carbon dioxide and water in the reservoir formation with the nonionic, non-emulsifying surfactant;

lowering a viscosity of oil in the reservoir formation; and

producing oil having the lowered viscosity from the reservoir formation.
