Abstract

A vertical axis wind turbine system having a vertical mast with one or more turbine units supported thereon. The turbine units are of modular construction for assembly around the foot of the mast; are vertically moveable along the height of the mast by a winch system; and are selectively interlocking with the mast to fix the turbine units in parked positions. The turbine system and each turbine unit includes a network of portals and interior rooms for the passage of personnel through the system, including each turbine unit. The electrical generators, and other sub-components, in the turbine units are of modular construction that permits the selective removal and replacement of component segments, including the transport of component segments through the portals and interior rooms of the turbine system while the turbine units remain supported on the mast. The electrical generators are also selectively convertible between AC generators and DC generators.

Claims (38)

1. A vertical wind turbine system comprising:

a vertical mast and two or more turbine units supported on the mast; wherein

the turbine units comprise a carousel-carrier and a carousel rotatably supported on the carousel-carrier,

the carousel comprises a carousel-hub, a pair of carousel arms extending from the carousel-hub, and a carousel blade extending between the pair of carousel arms,

the mast comprises a number of winches,

a first turbine unit comprises a number of winch couplers that receive one or more first winch cables from the number of winches, and is moveable along a vertical height of the mast under the power of the winches, and

a second turbine unit comprises a number of winch couplers that receive one or more second winch cables from the number of winches, and is moveable along a vertical height of the mast under the power of the winches.

2. The wind turbine system of claim 1 , wherein

the number of winches is a collection of winches mounted at the top of the mast.

3. The wind turbine system of claim 2 , wherein

the first turbine unit comprises a number of winch channels that extend vertically through the first turbine unit, and

the winch cables received at the winch couplers of the second turbine unit extend through one or more winch channels in the number of winch channels of the first turbine unit.

4. A wind turbine system comprising:

a wind turbine unit comprising a carousel-carrier and a carousel rotatably supported on the carousel-carrier, wherein

a vertical channel extends through a radial center of the carousel-carrier for reception of a vertical mast and a vertical channel extends through a radial center of the carousel for reception of the carousel-carrier,

the carousel comprises a carousel-hub, a pair of carousel arms extending from the carousel-hub, and a carousel blade extending between the pairs of carousel arms,

a portal at the vertical channel of the carousel-carrier grants access to an interior room within the carousel-carrier,

the turbine unit is configured to selectively brake rotation of the carousel to secure the carousel at a locked position fixing it against rotation around the carousel-carrier,

a portal at the vertical channel of the carousel-hub grants access to an interior room within the carousel-hub,

a portal at a radially outer surface the carousel-carrier is configured to align with the portal at the vertical channel of the carousel-hub to grant passage from the interior room of the carousel-carrier to the interior room of the carousel-hub.

5. The wind turbine system of claim 4 , wherein

while braked against rotation under the force of a wind flow, the carousel is incrementally rotatable around the carousel-carrier for aligning the portal at the vertical channel of the carousel-hub with the portal at the radially outer surface the carousel-carrier.

6. The wind turbine system of claim 4 , wherein

a portal at a radially outer surface the carousel-hub grants access to a passageway within a carousel arm.

7. A wind turbine system comprising:

a wind turbine unit comprising a carousel-carrier and a carousel rotatably supported on the carousel-carrier, wherein

a vertical channel extends through a radial center of the carousel-carrier for reception of a vertical mast, and a vertical channel extends through a radial center of the carousel for reception of the carousel-carrier,

the carousel comprises a carousel-hub, a pair of carousel arms extending from the carousel-hub, and a carousel blade extending between the pairs of carousel arms,

a portal at the vertical channel of the carousel-carrier grants access to an interior room within the carousel-carrier,

the turbine unit is supported on a mast comprising an interior room and a portal at an outer surface that is configured to align with the portal at the vertical channel of the carousel-carrier to grant passage from the interior room of the mast to the interior room of the carousel-carrier.

8. The wind turbine system of claim 7 , wherein

the mast comprises an elevator shaft communicating with a number of portals at the outer surface of the mast for passage through portals at vertical channels of carousel-carriers in a number of turbine units supported on the mast.

9. The wind turbine system of claim 7 , wherein

the turbine unit comprises a stator housing in the interior room of the carousel-carrier that releasably receives stator segments of a modular generator stator.

10. The wind turbine system of claim 9 , wherein

the stator housing receives stator segments that are sufficiently sized for passage through the interior rooms and portals of the mast and carousel-carrier, such that individual stator segments may be selectively inserted and removed in the turbine system while the turbine unit remains supported on the mast.

11. The wind turbine system of claim 10 , wherein

the stator housing comprises electrical connections for mating with pre-wired stator segments, including electrical connections for mating with stator segments pre-wired for generating alternating electrical current and electrical connections for mating with stator segments pre-wired for generating direct electrical current.
