Abstract

A permanent magnet is pivotally mounted in a top spacer layer of a switching device and rests on a flex arm created in an underlying flex circuit layer. The underside of the flex arm rests on a thin bar formed in a lower spacer layer beneath which lies a base layer including an electromagnet. Activation of the electromagnet causes rotation of the flex arm to thereby close and open electrical contacts formed respectively on the underside of the flex arm and on the top surface of the base layer.

Claims (27)

1. A switching device comprising:

a planar flex circuit layer with a single permanent magnet mounted thereon, the single permanent magnet having a central pivot point and being configured to rotate about said pivot point to open or close electrical contacts;

a soft iron core magnet and a coil wound about the core, the magnet and coil being disposed beneath the flex circuit layer; and

a first pair of electrical contacts positioned on a bottom surface of the flex circuit layer.

2. The device of claim 1 comprising a base printed circuit board (PCB) which is a multilayer board having a second pair of electrical contacts mounted thereon and positioned to electrically connect with a respective one of said first pair of electrical contacts.

3. The device of claim 2 further configured such that when a power pulse is applied to the coil, one end of the soft iron core magnet will be north and the other end will be south, making the magnetic beam (flex layer plus permanent magnet), which is north facing down, flip to the south end of the coil, whereafter the permanent magnet is attracted to the soft iron core magnet which holds the permanent magnet in place.

4. The device of claim 3 further configured such that the permanent magnet may be held in either one of two positions.

5. The device of claim 2 further comprising a plastic spacer positioning the flex circuit layer spaced apart from the base PCB.

6. The device of claim 1 wherein said flex circuit layer comprises a flex printed circuit board.

7. A switching device structure comprising:

a flex circuit layer having a flex arm suspended to pivot in a cavity formed in said flex circuit layer by first and second pivot arms, each of the first and second pivot arms being positioned on respective opposite sides of said flex arm and extending horizontally from the respective opposite side;

first and second electrical contacts mounted on a bottom surface of said flex arm and positioned to come into contact with respective third and fourth electrical contacts positioned on an underlying base component; and

first and second electrical signal traces on said bottom surface respectively configured to electrically interconnect with the first and second electrical contacts and to run out a respective one of the pivot arms onto a surface of said flex circuit layer adjacent said cavity, the flex arm further being pivotable with respect to said flex circuit layer to such an extent that the first and second electrical contacts are enabled to come into contact with the respective third and fourth electrical contacts on the underlying base component.

8. The switching device structure of claim 7 further comprising a permanent magnet positioned above said flex circuit layer and adapted to move in unison with said flex circuit layer.

9. The switching device structure of claim 8 further comprising a soft iron core magnet and an electrically conductive coil wound thereabout, the coil and soft iron core magnet being disposed beneath the flex circuit layer.

10. The switching device structure of claim 7 further comprising a plastic spacer configured to position the flex circuit layer spaced apart from said underlying base component.

11. The switching device structure of claim 8 further comprising a plastic spacer configured to position the flex circuit layer spaced apart from said underlying base component.

12. The switching device structure of claim 9 further comprising a plastic spacer configured to position the flex circuit layer spaced apart from said underlying base component.

13. The switching device structure of claim 7 wherein the flex circuit layer comprises a single layer of printed circuit board material.

14. The switching device structure of claim 7 wherein the flex circuit layer comprises a copper plated Kapton layer.

15. A switching device structure comprising:

a flex circuit layer having a flex arm suspended to pivot in a cavity formed in said flex circuit layer by first and second pivot arms, each of the first and second pivot arms being positioned on respective opposite sides of said flex arm and extending horizontally from the respective opposite side;

first and second electrical contacts mounted on a bottom surface of said flex arm and positioned to come into contact with respective third and fourth electrical contacts positioned on an underlying base component; and

first and second electrical signal traces on said bottom surface respectively configured to electrically interconnect with the first and second electrical contacts and to run out a respective one of the pivot arms onto a surface of said flex circuit layer adjacent said cavity.

16. The switching device structure of claim 15 further comprising a second structural layer positioned above said flex circuit layer and having a permanent magnet pivotally mounted in a cavity thereof, the permanent magnet resting on said flex arm.

17. The switching device structure of claim 16 wherein said second structural layer comprises conventional printed circuit material.

18. The switching device structure of claim 16 wherein said second structural layer comprises FR 4 printed circuit board material.
