Background reloading of currently displayed content

1. A computer-implemented method for loading a current version of a web page, the method comprising:

receiving, in a memory of a local device, a previously visited version of a web page from a remote client computing device over a network based on authentication to a user account associated with the remote client computing device;

receiving by the local device a first request from a user to display the web page;

providing, for display in response to the first request, the received previously visited version of the web page stored in the memory of the local device;

determining that an updated version of the web page is available at a server remote from the local device;

initiating, in response to determining that the updated version is available, a second request to load the updated version of the web page while the previously visited version of the web page is provided for display, and providing, for display, a visual indicator that the updated version of the web page is loading while the previously visited version of the web page is provided for display;

determining that the updated version cannot be loaded; and

providing, for display with the display of the previously visited version of the web page and in response to determining that the updated version cannot be loaded, another visual indicator that the previously visited version of the web page is being displayed and not the updated version of the web page.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the loading the updated version of the web page while the previously visited version of the web page is provided for display comprises loading but not displaying the updated version of the web page.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein loading but not displaying the updated version of the web page comprises downloading and rendering the updated version of the web page.

4. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein the previously visited version of the web page comprises a link to a first version of at least one item to be displayed with the previously visited version of the web page,

wherein the updated version of the web page comprises a link to a second version of the at least one item to be displayed with the updated version of the web page, and

wherein the method further comprises storing, in the memory of the local device, an indicator that the first version of the at least one item is only to be displayed with the previously visited version of the web page, and the second version of the at least one item is only to be displayed with the current version of the web page.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the providing the previously visited version of the web page in response to the first request comprises executing an instruction to serve the previously visited version of the web page, and wherein the determining whether the updated version of the web page is available occurs subsequent to the instruction to serve the previously visited version of the web page and comprises executing an instruction to validate whether the updated version of the web page is available.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the previously visited version of the web page is synchronized with multiple devices associated with the user account.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein providing the previously visited version of the web page for display in response to the first request comprises confirming that the previously visited version of the web page includes an indicator permitting the previously visited version of the web page to be displayed when the determination indicates the updated version of the web page is available.

8. A system for loading a current version of a web page, the system comprising:

a memory comprising a previously visited version of a web page; and

a processor configured to:

receive, in the memory, a previously visited version of the web page from a remote client computing device over a network based on authentication to a user account associated with the remote client computing device:

receive a first request from a user to display the web page;

provide, for display in response to the first request, the received previously visited version of the web page from the memory;

determine that an updated version of the web page is available at a server remote from the system; and

initiate, in response to determining that the updated version is available, a second request to load the updated version of the web page and provide, for display, a visual indicator that the updated version of the web page is loading while the previously visited version of the web page is provided for display;

determining that the updated version cannot be loaded;

provide, for display, a visual indicator that the updated version of the web page is loading while the previously visited version of the web page is provided for display; and

provide, for display with the display of the previously visited version of the web page and in response to determining that the updated version cannot be loaded, another visual indicator that the previously visited version of the web paae is being displayed and not the updated version of the web page.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the processor being configured to load the updated version of the web page while the previously visited version of the web page is provided for display comprises the processor being configured to load but not display the updated version of the web page.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the processor being configured to load but not display the updated version of the web page comprises the processor being configured to download and render the updated version of the web page.

11. The system of claim 8 ,

wherein the previously visited version of the web page comprises a link to a first version of at least one item to be displayed with the previously visited version of the web page,

wherein the updated version of the web page comprises a link to a second version of the at least one item to be displayed with the updated version of the web page, and

wherein the processor is further configured to store, in the memory, an indicator that the first version of the at least one item is only to be displayed with the previously visited version of the web page, and the second version of the at least one item is only to be displayed with the current version of the web page.

The system of claim 8 , wherein the processor being configured to provide the previously visited version of the web page in response to the first request comprises the processor being configured to execute an instruction to serve the previously visited version of the web page, and wherein the processor being configured to determine whether the updated version of the web page is available occurs subsequent to the instruction to serve the previously visited version of the web page and comprises executing an instruction to validate whether the updated version of the web page is available.

13. The system of claim 8 , wherein the previously visited version of the web page is synchronized with multiple devices associated with the user account.

14. The system of claim 8 , wherein the processor being configured to provide the previously visited version of the web page for display in response to the first request comprises the processor being configured to confirm that the previously visited version of the web page includes an indicator permitting the previously visited version of the web page to be displayed when the determination indicates the updated version of the web page is available.

15. A non-transitory machine-readable storage medium comprising machine-readable instructions for causing a processor to execute a method for loading a current version of a web page, the method comprising:

receiving, in a memory of a local device associated with the processor, a previously visited version of the web page from a remote client computing device over a network based on authentication to a user account associated with the remote client computing device;

receiving by the local device a first request from a user to display the web page on the local device;

providing, for display in response to the first request, the received previously visited version of the web page stored in a memory of the device;

determining that an updated version of the web page is available remote from the local device;

initiating, in response to determining that the updated version is available, a second request to load the updated version of the web page, and, for display, a visual indicator that the updated version of the web page is loading while the previously visited version of the web page is provided for display; and

provide, for display with the display of the previously visited version of the web page and in response to determining that the updated version cannot be loaded, another visual indicator that the previously visited version of the web page is being displayed and not the updated version of the web page.
