Abstract

A probe insertion device for implanting a probe into tissue includes a rigid base that selectively attaches to the probe due to a bond between the base and the probe, that provides a structural backbone to the probe, is longitudinally aligned with the probe, and can be adapted to receive a fluid between the base and the probe. The probe insertion device can include a surface covering at least a portion of the base that reduces the bond between the base and the probe in the presence of the fluid.

Claims (22)

1. A method of implanting an insertable end of a flexible neural probe into tissue, comprising the steps:

attaching a rigid base being a flat rigid blade to the flexible neural probe, thereby providing a structural backbone to the flexible neural probe;

inserting at least a portion of the insertable end of the flexible neural probe into the tissue;

decoupling at least a portion of the flexible neural probe from the rigid base by flowing a fluid between the base and the flexible neural probe to induce detachment of the base from the flexible neural probe; and

withdrawing the base from the tissue.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of attaching a base being a flat rigid blade to the flexible neural probe includes attaching the flat rigid base to the flexible neural probe with at least one chemical bond selected from the group consisting of electrostatic forces, covalent bonds, ionic bonds, metallic bonds, van der Waals bonds, and hydrogen bonds.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the step of flowing a fluid between the base and the flexible neural probe includes introducing a fluid that reduces the chemical bond between the base and the flexible neural probe.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of decoupling at least a portion of the flexible neural probe from the base includes peeling a portion of the flexible neural probe from the base.

5. A method of implanting a flexible neural probe into tissue, comprising the steps:

providing a flexible neural probe including an insertable end that is implantable into the tissue;

attaching a flat rigid base to at least a portion of the probe, thereby providing a structural backbone to the probe;

inserting at least a portion of the probe into the tissue;

decoupling at least a portion of the probe from the base directly in response to a fluid flowing between the base and the probe to induce detachment of the base from the probe; and

withdrawing the base from the tissue.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein the step of attaching a rigid base to at least a portion of the probe comprises attaching a rigid base to at least a portion of the probe via hydrophobic interaction.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the step of decoupling at least a portion of the probe from the base directly in response to a fluid flowing between the base and the probe to induce detachment of the base from the probe comprises a fluid that reduces the hydrophobic interaction between the base and the probe.

8. The method of claim 5 , wherein the step of attaching a rigid base to at least a portion of the probe comprises attaching the rigid base to at least a portion of the probe with at least one chemical bond selected from the group consisting of electrostatic forces, covalent bonds, ionic bonds, metallic bonds, van der Waals bonds, and hydrogen bonds.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the step of allowing a fluid to flow between the base and the probe includes introducing a fluid that reduces the chemical bond between the base and the probe.

10. The method of claim 5 , wherein the step of decoupling at least a portion of the probe from the base includes peeling a portion of the probe from the base.

11. The method of claim 5 , wherein the step of attaching a rigid base to at least a portion of the probe includes attaching a rigid base having at least one of a groove and a ridge that decreases the area of contact between the base and the probe.

12. The method of claim 5 , wherein the step of allowing a fluid to flow between the base and the probe comprises allowing a fluid to flow along a channel formed between the base and the probe.

13. The method of claim 5 , wherein the step of allowing a fluid to flow between the base and the probe comprises allowing artificial cerebrospinal fluid to flow between the base and the probe.
