Abstract

A universal clamping assembly for a key duplicating machine is described. The clamping assembly comprises a housing having a pair of opposed flat guide rail support surfaces and a sliding tip clamp is guidingly displaceable along each of the guide rail support surfaces and are urged against the tip of the key and key blank blades which are positioned on the guide rails. A pivoting clamp is displaceably engageable on a forward top edge of the respective key blades to apply a downward force on the key blades to ensure that the lower edge of the key blades is firmly resting against the guide rail support surfaces. A pair of cam operated side clamps is actuable to further clamp the blade on their sides at two distinct areas. The universal clamping assembly is capable of accommodating different key and key blank lengths, widths and thicknesses. The method of clamping the key and key blank is also described.

Claims (8)

1. A universal clamping assembly for a key duplicating machine, comprising: a housing having a pair of opposed flat guide rail support surfaces, a sliding tip clamp guidingly displaceable along at least a portion of each said guide rail support surfaces, a biasing member to bias a key tip clamping wall of said sliding tip clamp against a lower angulated end portion of a single or double-sided key and key blank disposed with a bottom edge of a key blade thereof supported on a respective one of said guide rail support surfaces, a pivoting flap clamp displaceably engageable on a forward top edge portion of a respective one of the key blades to apply a downward force on the key blades to force the bottom edge thereof against its respective one of said opposed guide rail support surfaces, and a pair of cam operated side clamps for immovably and transversely clamping the key blades.

2. A universal clamping assembly as claimed in claim 1 further comprising a centering plate having a pair of window slots which are aligned with a respective one of said pair of opposed guide rail support surfaces to guidingly receive therethrough the key blades.

3. A universal clamping assembly as claimed in claim 1 wherein each said sliding tip clamp has a base slidingly retained captive on a respective one of said flat guide rail support surfaces, an upwardly and rearwardly extending diagonal clamp wall extending from said base for frictional engagement with a key tip lower diagonal portion, whereby said diagonal clamp wall extends away from the top edge of the key blades to accommodate a key cutter or a stylus to be engaged with the top edge.

4. A universal clamping assembly as claimed in claim 1 wherein said pivoting flap clamp has a flap portion spring biased in a key blade engagement position through a shaft having a torque mechanism secured thereto, and a flap lifting member displaceably secured about said shaft and having a finger engageable portion with said flap portion to retract said pivoting clamp to a key blade disengaged position.

5. A universal clamping assembly as claimed in claim 4 wherein said torque mechanism comprises a pinion gear secured to said shaft, a toothed rack in toothed engagement with said pinion gear, a spring biasing said rack to urge said rack in a direction to apply a rotational force to said pinion gear and said shaft to bias said flap portion of said pivoting clamp at said key blade engagement position.

6. A universal clamping assembly as claimed in claim 1 wherein said cam operated side clamps comprise a pair of side clamping walls, each said side clamping walls being disposed to a side of a respective one of said flat side rails and biased to a key disengaged position on a lower pivot connection, a disc cam rotatably displaceable between said pair of side clamping walls on a cam shaft, said disc cam having opposed vertical walls each having an identical ramp formation, said ramp formations being aligned with nubs secured to opposed outer side walls of each said side clamping walls, an actuator to displace said cam on said cam shaft to cause said ramps to apply an outward pushing force against said numbs to impart a pivoting side displacement of said side clamping walls on said lower pivot connections to cause clamping formations at an upper end of said clamping walls to apply a clamping pressure against at least two spaced-apart locations of said key and key blank to clampingly retain same against an opposed ramp wall secured to said support housing above each said flat guide rail support surface.

7. A universal clamping assembly as claimed in claim 6 wherein each said sliding tip clamps is transversely displaceable on said guide rail surface against a transverse spring force secured to said housing and aligned with a base of said sliding tip clamp, said sliding tip clamp having a vertical flange wall projecting from an upwardly and rearwardly extending diagonal clamp wall extending from said base, said vertical flange wall being engaged by one of said clamping formations to apply pressure against a lower end portion of a tip end of said key and key blank against said transverse spring force to clamp said lower end portion against said ramp wall.

8. A universal clamping assembly as claimed in claim 1 wherein a key blank biting assembly is mounted in an upper part above said housing and provided with a stylus follower secured to a cutter blade support housing for cutting a bitted contour in said key blank duplicating said bitted formation in said key to be duplicated.
