Abstract

A video game includes a plurality of components providing for opportunities for increased social interaction of users playing the video game. The video game may be a music-based video game, and a server may provide content of the video game to game devices for play at predefined times.

Claims (32)

1. A method for providing for video game play, comprising:

determining a time period for play of video game content, the video game content comprising audio information, visual information for display, and instructive cue information for a plurality of songs, the instructive cue information for each particular song in the plurality of songs providing instructions to a user for manipulation of an input device during play of the particular song;

transmitting, over a network, scheduling information of the time period for play of the video game content to a plurality of game devices;

receiving over the network requests from at least some of the plurality of game devices for the video game content, for play during the time period;

transmitting, over the network, the video game content to the at least some of the plurality of game devices, for play during the time period; and

further comprising determining if there is a lull, the lull being a predetermined duration in which a user need not comply with the instructive cues, and in response to determining the presence of the lull, commanding display of posts generated by users who have been identified as friends of a particular user.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the video game content is transmitted prior to the time period.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the video game content is transmitted during the time period.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the video game is a music-based video game and the video game content comprises video of at least one musical performance and instructive cue information.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising:

determining that an advertisement has associated instructive cue information;

transmitting the advertisement to the game devices and, responsive to determining that the advertisement has associated instructive cue information, transmitting the associated instructive cue information.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the advertisement comprises a promotional message related to a particular player.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the advertisements are transmitted at times expected to alleviate player fatigue.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving performance information indicating performance of users using the game devices.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the performance indication indicates performance of users using the game devices at predefined checkpoints.

10. The method of claim 8 , further comprising generating a ranking of the users based on the performance information.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising generating a map of locations of the at least some of the plurality of game devices.

12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining a further time period for play of further video game content;

receiving requests from a further plurality of game devices for the video game content, for play during the further time period; and

transmitting the further video game content to the further plurality of game devices, for play during the further time period.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the time period and the further time period are the same time period.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the time period and the further time period are different time periods.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the time period and the further time period are successive time periods.

16. The method of claim 1 , further comprising transmitting further video game content to a particular game device only if a user of the particular game device has provided payment for the further video game content.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined duration is three seconds.

18. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving the video game content by the at least some of the plurality of game devices;

displaying, as part of game play, the instructive cues of the video game content on a display device coupled to or part of the at least some of the plurality of game devices;

processing inputs, from game controllers, as part of game play, by the at least some of the plurality of game devices; and

transmitting, over the network, results of game play from the at least some of the plurality of game devices.
