Abstract

The present invention provides compositions of modified pectin and methods for preparing and using them.

Claims (14)

1. A capsule containing a liquid pectin composition comprising a copolymer of homogalacturonic acid and rhamnogalacturonan I having galactose- and arabinose-containing sidechains, wherein the copolymer has an average molecular weight in the range of 10-250 kD and a polydispersity below 2.5, and wherein the composition is substantially free of modified pectins having molecular weights below 25 kD.

2. A capsule containing a liquid pectin composition comprising particles of a copolymer of homogalacturonic acid and rhamnogalacturonan I having galactose- and arabinose-containing sidechains, wherein the copolymer has an average molecular weight in the range of 10-250 kD and a polydispersity below 2.5, the particles have an average particle size less than 0.65 μm as measured by dynamic light scattering or atomic force microscopy and the composition is substantially free of modified pectins having molecular weights below 25 kD.

3. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the copolymer has an average molecular weight from 50-200 kD.

4. The composition of claim 3 , wherein the copolymer has an average molecular weight from 80-150 kD.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the copolymer has an average molecular weight from 80-100 kD.

6. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition is an aqueous solution.

7. The composition of claim 6 , wherein the solution contains at least 0.5% by weight of the copolymer.

8. The composition of claim 7 , wherein the solution contains at least 5% by weight of the copolymer.

9. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition is a colloidal suspension.

10. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition is a colloidal solution.

11. The composition of claim 2 , wherein the particles are less than 0.20 μm in diameter.

12. A pharmaceutical composition comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient and the composition of claim 1 .

13. A dosage form comprising the composition of claim 1 .

14. The dosage form of claim 13 , wherein the dosage form is suitable for oral dosage.
