Abstract

A fluffy nano-material and method of manufacture are described. At 2000× magnification the fluffy nanomaterial has the appearance of raw, uncarded wool, with individual fiber lengths ranging from approximately four microns to twenty microns. Powder-based nanocatalysts are dispersed in the fluffy nanomaterial. The production of fluffy nanomaterial typically involves flowing about 125 cc/min of organic vapor at a pressure of about 400 torr over powder-based nano-catalysts for a period of time that may range from approximately thirty minutes to twenty-four hours.

Claims (18)

1. A nanomaterial comprising:

a metal powder support material selected from a group consisting of Sc, Ni, Fe, Cr, Co, Ti, V, Mn, Cu, Zn, Y, Zr, Nb, Ru, Rh, Pd, Hf, Ta, W, Re, Ir, Pt, Au, Ce, Th, and U containing metals, alloys, and intermetallics thereof;

nanoparticles formed on a surface of the metal powder support material; and

carbon nanotubes anchored directly to the surface of the metal powder support material and anchored directly to the nanoparticles on the surface of the metal powder support material,

wherein the metal powder support material acts as a catalyst for growing the carbon nanotubes at least in part directly from the surface of the metal powder support material such that the carbon nanotubes are anchored directly to the surface of the metal powder support material,

wherein the nanoparticles act as a separate catalyst for growing the carbon nanotubes at least in part from the nanoparticles such that the carbon nanotubes are anchored directly to the nanoparticles on the surface of the metal powder support material, and

wherein the metal powder support material includes support particles having a diameter of less than 100 microns.

2. The nanomaterial of claim 1 wherein the individual carbon nanotubes have a length of at least 100 microns.

3. The nanomaterial of claim 1 wherein the metal powder support material includes a plurality of nano-scale features formed on the surface of the metal powder support material.

4. The nanomaterial of claim 3 wherein the plurality of nano-scale features are formed by ball milling the metal powder support material.

5. The nanomaterial of claim 1 wherein the metal powder support material comprises NiAl powder.

6. The nanomaterial of claim 5 wherein the nanoparticles comprise one of iron, nickel, and cobalt containing ions.

7. The nanomaterial of claim 1 wherein the metal powder support material is selected from a group consisting of Sc, Ni, Fe, Cr, Co, Ti, V, Mn, Cu, and Zn containing metals, alloys, and intermetallics thereof.

8. The nanomaterial of claim 1 wherein the carbon nanotubes include a length of about 100 microns up to about one centimeter.

9. The nanomaterial of claim 1 wherein the carbon nanotubes include a length of about 4 microns.

10. The nanomaterial of claim 1 wherein the metal powder support material includes support particles having a diameter of about 0.5 microns to about 60microns.

11. The nanomaterial of claim 1 wherein the metal powder support material includes support particles having a diameter of about 0.5 microns.

12. The nanomaterial of claim 1 wherein the metal powder support material includes support particles having a diameter of about 10 nanometers.
