Abstract

Devices and approaches for activating cross-linking within corneal tissue to stabilize and strengthen the corneal tissue following an eye therapy treatment. A feedback system is provided to acquire measurements and pass feedback information to a controller. The feedback system may include an interferometer system, a corneal polarimetry system, or other configurations for monitoring cross-linking activity within the cornea. The controller is adapted to analyze the feedback information and adjust treatment to the eye based on the information. Aspects of the feedback system may also be used to monitor and diagnose features of the eye 1 . Methods of activating cross-linking according to information provided by a feedback system in order to improve accuracy and safety of a cross-linking therapy are also provided.

Claims (27)

1. A system for treating a cornea of an eye, comprising:

one or more laser light sources configured to emit an ultrashort pulsed laser beam;

a mirror array configured to direct the ultrashort pulsed laser beam from the one or more laser light sources to a region of a cornea treated with a cross-linking agent;

a controller configured to provide one or more control signals to programmatically control which mirrors of the mirror array reflect the ultrashort pulsed laser beam and to apply the ultrashort pulsed laser beam to the cornea; and

one or more feedback systems configured to provide the controller with real time feedback information relating to monitoring of activation of the cross-linking agent in the region of the cornea during application of the ultrashort pulsed laser beam to the cornea,

wherein the ultrashort pulsed laser beam is directed to at least one spot having an appropriate focal volume to achieve multiphoton activation in the region of the cornea, and

in response to the real time feedback information, the controller is configured to protect the cornea from unnecessary exposure to the ultrashort pulsed laser beam by determining an end point for the application of the ultrashort pulsed laser beam based on the monitoring of the activation of the cross-linking agent in the region of the cornea and ceasing the application of the ultrashort pulsed laser beam according to the end point.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the cross-linking agent includes riboflavin.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more laser light sources includes a femtosecond laser.

4. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the mirror array scans the ultrashort pulsed laser beam over the region of the cornea defined according to a pattern of two dimensions of pixels.

5. The system of claim 1 , further comprising one or more adjustable mirrors configured to scan the ultrashort pulsed laser beam over selected mirrors in the mirror array, each of the selected mirrors scanning the ultrashort pulsed laser beam over the region of the cornea.

6. The system according to claim 5 , wherein each of the selected mirrors is alignable to scan the ultrashort pulsed laser beam over the region of the cornea.

7. The system according to claim 1 , further comprising an objective lens configured to focus the ultrashort pulsed laser beam at one or more selected focal planes of the cornea.

8. The system according to claim 6 , wherein the ultrashort pulsed laser beam is scanned over the region of the cornea at a plurality of depths of the cornea according to a three-dimensional profile.

9. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the mirror array is provided in a digital micromirror device.

10. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the one or more feedback systems includes an eye-tracking system configured to provide position data relating to movement of the eye.

11. A method for treating a cornea of an eye, comprising:

generating, with one or more light sources, an ultrashort pulsed laser beam;

directing, via a mirror array, the ultrashort pulsed laser beam from the one or more light sources to a region of a cornea treated with a cross-linking agent;

providing, with a controller, one or more control signals to programmatically control which mirrors of the mirror array reflect the ultrashort pulsed laser beam and to apply the ultrashort pulsed laser beam to the cornea;

monitoring, with one or more feedback systems, activation of the cross-linking agent in the region of the cornea during application of the ultrashort pulsed laser beam to the cornea; and

providing, from the one or more feedback systems, to the controller, real time feedback information relating to the activation of the cross-linking agent in the region of the cornea; and

in response to the real time feedback information, protecting the cornea from unnecessary exposure to the ultrashort pulsed laser beam by determining, with the controller, an end point for the application of the ultrashort pulsed laser beam based on the monitoring of the activation of the cross-linking agent in the region of the cornea and ceasing, with the controller, the application of the ultrashort pulsed laser beam according to the end point,

wherein the ultrashort pulsed laser beam is directed to at least one spot having an appropriate focal volume to achieve multiphoton activation in the region of the cornea.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising treating the region of the cornea with the cross-linking agent.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the cross-linking agent includes riboflavin.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the one or more light sources includes a femtosecond laser.
