Abstract

A method and device for treating hernia by implanting at least one collapsible hernia repair patch, such as a planar mesh body at least partially enveloped by one or more elastic collars. A posterior end of an applicator carrying the repair patch may be inserted through a hernia and into the wall of the abdominal cavity, and the patch may be released into the cavity, e.g., so as to helically deploy the patch such that the patch lies in parallel to the abdominal wall. A balloon, which is removably attached to the patch, may be inflated to help move the patch to a deployed configuration, and thereafter the balloon removed from the hernia site.

Claims (31)

1. A hernia repair device, comprising:

a hernia repair patch having a first reduced configuration for insertion into a body and a second deployed configuration in which the hernia repair patch has a planar shape for deployment at a hernia site;

an elastic member coupled to the hernia repair patch; and

a flexible elongated member passing through the hernia repair patch, the hernia repair patch having a hole passing completely through the hernia repair patch, the hole configured to receive the flexible elongated member, wherein pulling on the elongated member causes the hernia repair patch to move.

2. The hernia repair patch of claim 1 , wherein the elastic member comprises nitinol.

3. The hernia repair patch of claim 1 , further comprising an inflatable balloon, wherein when the balloon is at least partially deflated, the hernia repair patch is in the first reduced configuration, and when the balloon is inflated, the hernia repair patch is in the second deployed configuration.

4. The hernia repair patch of claim 3 , wherein the balloon is configured to be detached from the hernia repair patch and removed from the body.

5. The hernia repair patch of claim 1 , further comprising an inflatable balloon having a first side and a second side, the hernia repair patch being removably attached to said balloon such that, when the hernia repair patch is in the second deployed configuration, the hernia repair patch is situated only on the first side of said balloon and the second side of the balloon is exposed.

6. The hernia repair patch of claim 1 , wherein the first reduced configuration of the repair patch comprises a rolled configuration.

7. The hernia repair patch of claim 1 , wherein the hernia repair patch is a two-dimensional sheet-like member.

8. The hernia repair patch of claim 1 , wherein the hernia repair patch is formed of a mesh.

9. The hernia repair patch of claim 1 , wherein the elastic member comprises an elastic rim about the hernia repair patch.

10. A hernia repair device, comprising:

a hernia repair patch having a first reduced configuration for insertion into a body and a second deployed configuration in which the hernia repair patch has a planar shape for deployment at a hernia site;

an elastic member coupled to the hernia repair patch; and

a flexible elongated member passing through the hernia repair patch, wherein pulling on the elongated member causes the hernia repair patch to move, the flexible elongated member being configurable in a first tortuous shape and configurable in a second tortuous shape, the first and second tortuous shapes being different from one another, the flexible elongated member being configurable in the second tortuous shape when the hernia repair patch is completely deployed in the second deployed configuration.

11. The hernia repair patch of claim 10 , wherein the elastic member comprises nitinol.

12. The hernia repair patch of claim 10 , further comprising an inflatable balloon, wherein when the balloon is at least partially deflated, the hernia repair patch is in the first reduced configuration, and when the balloon is inflated, the hernia repair patch is in the second deployed configuration.

13. The hernia repair patch of claim 12 , wherein the balloon is configured to be detached from the hernia repair patch and removed from the body.

14. The hernia repair patch of claim 10 , further comprising an inflatable balloon having a first side and a second side, the hernia repair patch being removably attached to said balloon such that, when the hernia repair patch is in the second deployed configuration, the hernia repair patch is situated only on the first side of said balloon and the second side of the balloon is exposed.

15. The hernia repair patch of claim 10 , wherein the first reduced configuration of the repair patch comprises a rolled configuration.

16. The hernia repair patch of claim 10 , wherein the hernia repair patch is a two-dimensional sheet-like member.

17. The hernia repair patch of claim 10 , wherein the hernia repair patch is formed of a mesh.

18. The hernia repair patch of claim 10 , wherein the elastic member comprises an elastic rim about the hernia repair patch.

19. A hernia repair device, comprising:

a hernia repair patch having a first reduced configuration for insertion into a body and a second deployed configuration in which the hernia repair patch has a planar shape for deployment at a hernia site;

an inflatable balloon, wherein when the balloon is at least partially deflated, the hernia repair patch is in the first reduced configuration, and when the balloon is inflated, the hernia repair patch is in the second deployed configuration;

an elastic member coupled to the hernia repair patch; and

a flexible elongated member in fluid communication with the inflatable balloon and passing completely through the hernia repair patch, wherein pulling on the elongated member causes the hernia repair patch to move.

20. The hernia repair patch of claim 19 , wherein the elastic member comprises nitinol.

21. The hernia repair patch of claim 19 , wherein the balloon is configured to be detached from the hernia repair patch and removed from the body.
