Abstract

The present invention provides a device and methodology for use in spinal fusion surgeries. An implant is proved for forming a rigid structure between adjoining vertebrae in a patient. The implant is a cage defined by at least a first end, second end, first side, and second side surface, wherein first and second side surfaces extend substantially parallel to each other to span a space between adjoining vertebrae and first and second ends interconnect said first side surface and second side surface. The cage incorporates one or more flexible joints that allow the cage to be deformed for insertion into a patient. The ability to deform the cage allows a greater ease and flexibility in inserting and positioning the implant.

Claims (34)

1. A surgical method comprising:

inserting a guide into a space between adjacent vertebrae; and

advancing a cage along the guide, the cage having one or more flexible joints that allow the cage to move between a curved configuration and a straight configuration;

wherein as the cage is advanced along the guide, the cage conforms to a curved portion of the guide such that the cage moves from the straight configuration to the curved configuration.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more flexible joints allow the cage to conform to a shape of the guide as the cage is advanced along the guide.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the cage is advanced along the guide via one or more projections on the cage that couple to the guide.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the cage is advanced along the guide via an inserter instrument coupled to an opening in a first end of the cage.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising removing disc material from the space between the adjacent vertebrae.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising distracting the space between the adjacent vertebrae before inserting the guide therein.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein when the cage is positioned in the space between the adjacent vertebrae, the cage is in the curved configuration.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising placing bone growth material in the cage prior to inserting the cage into the space between the adjacent vertebrae.

9. The method of claim 3 , wherein the cage slides along the guide via the one or more projections.

10. The method of claim 3 , wherein the one or more projections project out of at least one of first and second surfaces of the cage.

11. A surgical method comprising:

inserting an implant into a space between first and second vertebrae, the implant having:

superior and inferior surfaces,

first and second end surfaces,

first and second lateral surfaces, and

at least one joint that allows the implant to move from an insertion configuration in which the first and second lateral surfaces are substantially parallel to a deployed configuration in which the first and second lateral surfaces are curved;

wherein as the implant is inserted into the space between the first and second vertebrae, the first end surface follows a curved path along a curved guide and the implant moves from the insertion configuration to the deployed configuration.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the implant includes first and second mating features formed on opposite sides of the at least one joint.

13. The method of claim 11 , further comprising forming a transforaminal window to access the space between the first and second vertebrae and inserting the implant therethrough.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein an axis extending through the transforaminal window is disposed at an angle of around 45 degrees relative to an anterior-posterior axis of the vertebrae.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein an axis extending through the transforaminal window is disposed at an angle of around 35 degrees relative to an anterior-posterior axis of the vertebrae.

16. The method of claim 11 , further comprising placing bone growth material in the implant.

17. A surgical method, comprising:

forming a window that provides access to an intervertebral space;

positioning an implant having at least superior and inferior surfaces, first and second lateral surfaces, and first and second ends in a first configuration in which the first and second lateral surfaces are substantially straight;

passing the implant through the window and into the intervertebral space in the first configuration at least partially along a guide; and

transforming the implant without retracting the guide to a second configuration in which the first and second lateral surfaces have a curved shape and a first portion of the implant is positioned on a first side of an anterior-posterior axis of the space and a second portion of the implant is positioned on a second side of the anterior-posterior axis.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the window comprises a transforaminal window formed on a posterior side of vertebrae that defines the intervertebral space.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein an axis extending through the transforaminal window is disposed at an angle of around 45 degrees relative to an anterior-posterior axis of the vertebrae.

20. The method of claim 18 , wherein an axis extending through the transforaminal window is disposed at an angle of around 35 degrees relative to an anterior-posterior axis of the vertebrae.

21. The method of claim 17 , wherein the implant includes a spring mechanism that biases the implant to the second configuration.
