Abstract

A method of affixing a stent jacket to a stent, comprising aligning the stent jacket coaxially with the stent, placing a portion of the stent within a portion of the stent jacket, wherein a central axis of the stent is aligned with a central axis of the stent jacket, and affixing the stent jacket to the stent with a plurality of stitches, wherein the plurality of stitches form a plurality of consecutive loops that pass through one or more holes in the stent jacket and through an outer surface of the stent.

Claims (53)

1. A stent assembly, comprising:

a stent configured to be positioned in a body lumen; and

a stent jacket attached to the stent and comprising an expansible mesh structure that is a single layer and is configured to be coaxially disposed around an external surface of the stent, the expansible mesh structure being formed from a single fiber,

wherein the expansible mesh structure comprises a retracted state and a deployed state,

wherein in the deployed state, the expansible mesh structure comprises apertures sized between 20 and 100 microns,

wherein both the stent and the stent jacket have a tubular shape and an interior diameter of the stent jacket is larger than an exterior diameter of the stent,

wherein the stent jacket is attached to the stent by a plurality of stitches; and

wherein the single fiber has a fiber diameter of about 15 micrometers to 20 micrometers.

2. The stent assembly of claim 1 , wherein the stent, the stent jacket, and the plurality of stitches are each selected to comprise a biodegradable material.

3. The stent assembly of claim 2 , wherein the biodegradable material is selected to comprise a polymer.

4. The stent assembly of claim 2 , wherein the biodegradable material is selected to comprise a metal alloy.

5. The stent assembly of claim 1 , wherein an active pharmaceutical agent is eluted from the stent.

6. The stent assembly of claim 5 , wherein the active pharmaceutical agent is eluted from a coating disposed over a portion of the stent.

7. The stent assembly of claim 5 , wherein the active pharmaceutical agent is time-released according to a predetermined treatment schedule.

8. The stent assembly of claim 5 , wherein the active pharmaceutical agent is eluted from the stent jacket or a coating thereof.

9. A method of affixing a stent jacket to a stent, comprising:

aligning the stent jacket coaxially with the stent;

placing a portion of the stent within a portion of the stent jacket, wherein a central axis of the stent is aligned with a central axis of the stent jacket; and

forming the stent assembly of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of stitches form a plurality of consecutive loops that pass through one or more holes in the stent jacket and through an outer surface of the stent.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein a distal and a proximal portion of the stent jacket is attached to a distal and proximal aspect of the stent.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the plurality of stitches are disposed with equal spacing about a circumference at each end of the stent.

12. A method of attaching a stent to a stent jacket to form the stent assembly of claim 1 , comprising disposing the plurality of stitches only at a proximal and a distal end of the stent and the stent jacket.

13. A method of stenting a patient's vessel which comprises:

providing attaching an expansible stent to a stent jacket to form a stent-mesh assembly according to the method of claim 12 ;

determining a location of a treatment site within the patient's vessel;

inserting the stent-mesh assembly in a retracted state to a desired treatment position, wherein the desired treatment position is an expanded state at the treatment site within the patient's vessel; and

expanding the stent-mesh assembly in-situ in the desired treatment position in the patient's vessel to treat the patient's vessel.

14. A stent assembly, comprising:

a stent configured to be positioned in a body lumen;

a knitted stent jacket comprising a single layer expansible mesh structure extending along a complete length of, and surrounding an external surface of, the stent, the expansible mesh structure covering less than 25% of the external surface area of the stent and having apertures therethrough, wherein a distal and a proximal portion of the knitted stent jacket is attached to a distal and proximal aspect of the stent; and

a plurality of stitches that are configured to attach the knitted stent jacket to the stent, wherein each of the plurality of stitches passes through a section of the knitted stent jacket and through a section of the stent,

wherein the plurality of stitches are sliding connections configured to allow motion between the expansible mesh structure and the stent,

wherein the knitted stent jacket comprises one or more fibers having a fiber diameter of about 15 to 20 micrometers.

15. The stent assembly of claim 14 , wherein the plurality of stitches are disposed with equal spacing about a circumference at each end of the stent.

16. The stent assembly of claim 15 , wherein the plurality of stitches comprises a stitch at the distal aspect and at the proximal aspect of the stent.

17. The stent assembly of claim 15 , wherein the expansible mesh structure is formed from a single fiber.

18. The stent assembly of claim 14 , wherein an active pharmaceutical agent is eluted from the stent.

19. The stent assembly of claim 18 , wherein the active pharmaceutical agent is eluted from a coating disposed over a portion of the stent.

20. The stent assembly of claim 18 , wherein the active pharmaceutical agent is eluted from the knitted stent jacket or from a coating thereon.

21. The stent assembly of claim 14 , wherein the knitted stent jacket covers less than 25% of the stent.

22. The stent assembly of claim 14 , wherein the surface area of an outer surface of the mesh structure not covering the stent comprises apertures.
