Abstract

A method and system for determining activation times for electric potentials from complex electrograms to identify the location of arrhythmic sources or drivers. The method includes counting a number deflections in a recorded cardiac electrogram signal from at least one electrode for a predetermined amount of time. A deflection time is identified for each of the counted number of deflections. A most negative slope is identified between each of the identified deflections times. Each of the identified most negative slopes is correlated to a possible activation time. Each possible activation time is associated with a corresponding electrode from the at least one electrode. A spatial voltage gradient at each corresponding electrode is calculated for each possible activation time. The greatest spatial voltage gradient is identified. The greatest spatial voltage gradient is correlated to an activation time.

Claims (26)

1. A method of determining cardiac activation times in a patient with an arrhythmia, comprising:

counting a number deflections in a recorded cardiac electrogram signal from at least one electrode for a predetermined amount of time;

identifying a deflection time for each of the counted number of deflections;

identifying a most negative slope between each of the identified deflections times;

correlating each of the identified most negative slopes to a possible activation time;

associating each possible activation time to a corresponding electrode from the at least one electrode;

calculating a spatial voltage gradient at each corresponding electrode for each possible activation time;

identifying the greatest spatial voltage gradient; and

correlating the greatest spatial voltage gradient to an activation time.

2. The method of claim 1 , further including:

providing a medical device having the at least one electrode;

positioning the at least one electrode proximate a target tissue region; and

recording an electrogram signal for the target tissue region.

3. The method of claim 2 , further including:

providing a reference electrode remote from the medical device; and

transferring thermal energy from the at least one electrode to the reference electrode.

4. The method of claim 2 , further including:

displaying an image of the target tissue region; and

displaying the activation time at target tissue region proximate the electrode at which the activation time is determined.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein displaying the activation time at target tissue region proximate the electrode at which the activation time is determined and the recording of the electrogram occur substantially simultaneously.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one electrode includes two electrodes, and further including transferring thermal energy between the two electrodes.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein counting the number deflections includes counting the number of deflections with a negative slope.

8. The method of claim 1 , further including:

measuring a cycle length of an arrhythmia in a patient having atrial fibrillation; and

wherein the predetermined amount of time is substantially equal to the cycle length of the arrhythmia.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one electrode includes a plurality of electrodes, and wherein each of the plurality of electrodes is spaced substantially equidistant from an adjacent electrode.
