Abstract

A method of surgically implanting a reverse shoulder orthopedic implant, the method comprises the step of installing a glenosphere component having a bore formed therein over a metaglene component implanted within bone tissue of a glenoid surface of a scapula, capturing a screw cap within the bore of the glenosphere component, the screw cap positioned with a shaft of the screw cap located within a bore formed in an elongated stem of the metaglene component and an upper surface of a locking flange opposite the shaft of the screw cap flush with an upper surface of a platform of the metaglene component opposite the elongated stem of the metaglene component.

Claims (21)

1. A method of surgically implanting a reverse shoulder orthopaedic implant, the method comprising the step of:

installing a glenosphere component having a bore formed therein over a metaglene component implanted within bone tissue of a glenoid surface of a scapula, capturing a screw cap within the bore of the glenosphere component, the screw cap positioned with a shaft of the screw cap located within a bore formed in an elongated stem of the metaglene component and an upper surface of a locking flange opposite the shaft of the screw cap flush with an upper surface of a platform of the metaglene component opposite the elongated stem of the metaglene component.

2. The method of claim 1 , further including the step of threading the shaft of the screw cap within the bore of the metaglene component by engaging threads on an outer surface of the shaft of the screw cap with threads on an inner surface of the bore formed in the elongated stem of the metaglene component.

3. The method of claim 2 , further including engaging a drive socket within the locking flange of the screw cap with a tool to thread the shaft of the screw cap within the bore of the metaglene component.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the installing step includes attaching the glenosphere component to the metaglene component with an outermost periphery of the platform of the metaglene component engaging sidewalls defining the bore of the glenosphere component such that at least a portion of the platform and the screw cap are disposed within the bore.

5. A method of surgically implanting a reverse shoulder orthopaedic implant, the method comprising the step of:

installing a glenosphere component having a bore formed therein over a metaglene component implanted in bone tissue of a glenoid surface of a scapula, and

capturing a screw cap within the bore of the glenosphere component, the screw cap positioned with a shaft of the screw cap located within a bore formed in an elongated stem of the metaglene component and a locking flange extending outwardly from the shaft of the screw cap having a body with an outer surface and a retaining flange extending outwardly from the outer surface with a retaining ring positioned around the body and secured to and engaging sidewalls defining the bore within the glenosphere component.

6. The method of claim 5 , further including the step of implanting the metaglene component in the bone tissue of the glenoid surface of the scapula prior to installing the glenosphere component over the metaglene component.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the step of implanting the metaglene component includes the step of positioning a number of screws within a number of screw holes extending through the metaglene component.

8. The method of claim 5 , further including the step of threading the shaft of the screw cap within the bore of the metaglene component by engaging threads on an outer surface of the shaft of the screw cap with threads on an inner surface of the bore formed in the elongated stem of the metaglene component.

9. The method of claim 8 , further including engaging a drive socket within the locking flange of the screw cap with a tool to thread the shaft of the screw cap within the bore of the metaglene component.

10. The method of claim 5 , wherein the installing step includes the step of press fitting the retaining ring within the bore of the glenosphere component to retain the screw cap therein.

11. A method of surgically implanting a reverse shoulder orthopaedic implant, the method comprising the steps of:

implanting a metaglene component in bone tissue of a glenoid surface of a scapula, the metaglene component including a platform with (i) a number of screw holes extending therethrough, and (ii) an elongated stem extending outwardly from a medial surface thereof;

installing a glenosphere component having a bore formed therein over the metaglene component,

capturing a screw cap including (i) a shaft and (ii) a locking flange extending outwardly from the shaft, within the bore of the glenosphere component, the screw cap positioned with the shaft located within a bore formed in the elongated stem of the metaglene component and an upper surface of the locking flange opposite the shaft of the screw cap flush with an upper surface of the platform of the metaglene component opposite the elongated stem of the metaglene component.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the step of implanting the metaglene component includes the step of positioning a number of screws within the number of screw holes extending through the metaglene component.

13. The method of claim 11 , further including the step of threading the shaft of the screw cap within the bore of the metaglene component by engaging threads on an outer surface of the shaft of the screw cap with threads on an inner surface of the bore formed in the elongated stem of the metaglene component.

14. The method of claim 13 , further including engaging a drive socket within the locking flange of the screw cap with a tool to thread the shaft of the screw cap within the bore of the metaglene component.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the installing step includes attaching the glenosphere component to the metaglene component with an outermost periphery of the platform of the metaglene component engaging sidewalls defining the bore of the glenosphere component such that at least a portion of the platform and the screw cap are disposed within the bore.
