Abstract

Systems and methods are provided for managing access to registers. In one embodiment, a system may include a processor and a plurality of registers. The processor and the plurality of registers may be integrated into a single device, or may be in separate devices. The plurality of registers may include a first set of registers that are directly accessible by the processor, and a second set of registers that are not directly accessible by the processor. The second set of registers may, however, be accessed indirectly by the processor via the first set of registers. In one embodiment, the first set of registers may include a register for selecting a register bank from the second set of registers, and a register for selecting a particular address within the register bank, to allow indirect access by the processor to the registers of the second set.

Claims (31)

1. A method, comprising:

accessing, via a first device, a first set of registers of a second device directly accessible by the first device via a first address map;

accessing a second set of registers of the second device directly accessible by a pattern-recognition processor of the second device via a second address map; and

accessing, via the second device, a second set of registers of the second device indirectly accessible by the first device via the first set of registers, wherein the first device comprises a host computing device separate from the second device and configured to access operational or configuration information of the second device from the second set of registers via the first set of registers, wherein the first address map includes physical addresses for the first set of registers and does not include physical addresses for the second set of registers, wherein the second address map includes physical addresses for the first set of registers and the second set of registers.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein accessing the first set of registers includes writing a register address to an address select register of the first set of registers.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein accessing the second set of registers includes reading the register address from the address select register and accessing a register of the second set of registers associated with the register address.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein accessing the first set of registers includes writing a bank address to a bank select register of the first set of registers.

The method of claim 4 , wherein accessing the second set of registers includes reading the bank address from the bank select register, reading the register address from the address select register, and accessing a register associated with the register address from a register bank of the second set of registers associated with the bank address.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein accessing the register associated with the register address includes writing data from an input/output register of the first set of registers to the register associated with the register address.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein accessing the register associated with the register address includes reading data from the register associated with the register address and writing the data to an input/output register of the first set of registers.

8. A method, comprising:

directly accessing a first set of registers of a plurality of registers by a processor via first address map; and

directly accessing a second set of registers of the plurality of registers by a pattern-recognition processor via a second address map; and

indirectly accessing the second set of registers of the plurality of registers by the processor via the first set of registers, wherein the first address map includes physical addresses for the first set of registers and does not include physical addresses for the second set of registers, wherein the second address map includes physical addresses for the first set of registers and the second set of registers.

9. The method of claim 8 , comprising accessing the plurality of registers of a device via the processor internal to the device.

10. The method of claim 8 , comprising accessing the plurality of registers of a device via the processor external to the device.

11. The method of claim 8 , comprising accessing the plurality of registers of a device via the processor as a central processing unit of a computer system.

12. The method of claim 11 , comprising accessing via the processor the plurality of registers of the device as externally disposed from the computer system.

13. The method of claim 12 , comprising facilitating, via a memory management unit of the computer system, memory access by the processor via the first address map.

14. The method of claim 8 , comprising facilitating, via register access logic of the device, accessing, via the second address map, of one or more registers of the second set of registers based on data stored in at least one register of the first set of registers.

15. A method, comprising:

storing, in a plurality of registers, information related to operational characteristics of a pattern-recognition processor;

directly accessing, via a device, a first set of registers of the plurality of registers via a first address map;

directly accessing, via a second device, a second set of registers of the plurality of registers via a second address map; and

indirectly accessing, via the device, a second set of registers of the plurality of registers via the first set of registers through transmission of content from the second set of registers to the first set of registers to the device, wherein the first device comprises a host computing device separate from the pattern-recognition processor and configured to access the information related to operational characteristics of the pattern-recognition processor from the second set of registers via the indirect accessing of the second set of registers, wherein the first address map includes physical addresses for the first set of registers and does not include physical addresses for the second set of registers, wherein the second address map includes physical addresses for the first set of registers and the second set of registers.

16. The method of claim 15 , comprising storing a bank address of the second set of registers in an indirect bank select register of the first set of registers.

17. The method of claim 15 , comprising storing an address of a register of the second set of registers in an indirect address select register of the first set of registers.

18. The method of claim 15 , comprising writing to or reading from a register of the second set of registers by a data register of the first set of registers.

19. The method of claim 15 , comprising storing information related to a pattern-recognition process of the pattern-recognition processor in the plurality of registers.

20. The method of claim 15 , comprising managing access to the first set of registers and the second set of registers via access logic of the pattern-recognition processor.

21. The method of claim 15 , comprising managing access to the first set of registers and the second set of registers via access logic coupled to the pattern-recognition processor.
