Abstract

The present invention generally relates to vulcanization compositions used to vulcanize elastomeric articles, where the vulcanization compositions have reduced allergenic potential as compared to elastomeric articles formed using vulcanization compositions having non-fugitive accelerators. The present invention also relates to elastomeric articles formed using the vulcanization compositions. The invention further relates to methods for making a reduced-allergenicity vulcanization composition, and to methods for using the vulcanization compositions to vulcanize elastomeric articles.

Claims (19)

1. A method for preparing a reduced-allergenicity polychloroprene elastomeric glove article, comprising:

forming a first latex dispersion by mixing polychloroprene, a source of sulfur, diisopropyl xanthogen polysulfide, and a metal oxide;

dipping a glove-former by coagulant dipping into the latex dispersion to form a base layer;

dipping the former with the base layer thereon into a second latex dispersion to form a thin coating of the second latex dispersion upon the base layer;

vulcanizing the former with the coated base layer thereon in an oven at temperatures from about 120° C. to about 155° C.;

removing the coated base layer from the former such that the coated layer is positioned on an inner surface of the coated base layer;

inverting the coated base layer such that the coated layer is positioned on an outer surface of the coated base layer;

exposing the coated layer to an aqueous chlorine solution;

partially drying the chlorinated coated layer to result in the elastomeric glove; and

inverting the glove such that the coated layer is positioned on the inner surface.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second latex dispersion comprises a blend of two different latex materials.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second latex dispersion comprises a blend of the first latex dispersion and a nitrile latex.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second latex dispersion comprises a blend of the first latex dispersion and a synthetic polyisoprene latex.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising pre-washing with water prior to exposing the coated layer to the aqueous chlorine solution.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising rinsing the coated layer with water after exposure to the aqueous chlorine solution.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the aqueous chlorine solution contains about 300 ppm available chlorine.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising transferring the elastomeric glove to a tumbling washer and a further lubrication process to aid in wet donnability.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the lubrication process comprises tumbling the gloves with an aqueous solution comprising cetylpyridium chloride, silicone emulsion and ammonium salts of alkyl phosphate.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the lubrication process comprises tumbling the gloves with an aqueous solution comprising about 1.0% cetylpyridium chloride, about 1.0% silicone emulsion and about 1.5% ammonium salts of alkyl phosphate.
