Abstract

A high-speed signaling system with adaptive transmit pre-emphasis. A transmit circuit has a plurality of output drivers to output a first signal onto a signal path. A receive circuit is coupled to receive the first signal via the signal path and configured to generate an indication of whether the first signal exceeds a threshold level. A first threshold control circuit is coupled to receive the indication from the receive circuit and configured to adjust the threshold level according to whether the first signal exceeds the threshold level. A drive strength control circuit is coupled to receive the indication from the receive circuit and configured to adjust a drive strength of at least one output driver of the plurality of output drivers according to whether the first signal exceeds the threshold level.

Claims (48)

1. A circuit board comprising:

at least one signal trace to connect to a signal path;

an integrated circuit including a multi-tap transmitter, the multi-tap transmitter operable to output a digital sequence onto the signal path via the at least one signal trace in accordance with a set of tap weights; and

the multi-tap transmitter operable to update the set of tap weights responsive to an indication from a receiver, the indication generated responsive to a power constraint of the multi-tap transmitter.

2. The circuit board according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a nonvolatile memory.

3. The circuit board according to claim 1 , wherein:

the at least one signal trace is connectable to a backplane.

4. The circuit board according to claim 1 , wherein:

a first one of the set of tap weights corresponds to a current bit in the digital sequence, and a second one of the set of tap weights corresponds to another bit in the digital sequence.

5. The circuit board according to claim 1 , wherein:

the indication includes a set of values for the set of tap weights.

6. The circuit board according to claim 1 , wherein:

the power constraint includes an average power constraint of the multi-tap transmitter.

7. The circuit board according to claim 1 , wherein:

the power constraint includes a peak power constraint of the multi-tap transmitter.

8. The circuit board according to claim 1 , wherein:

the circuit board comprises a daughterboard.

9. A circuit board comprising:

at least one signal trace to connect to a signal path;

an integrated circuit including a receiver, the receiver operable to receive a digital sequence from a multi-tap transmitter via the at least one signal trace; and

the receiver operable to provide an indication to the multi-tap transmitter to update a set of tap weights of the multi-tap transmitter, the indication generated responsive to a power constraint of the multi-tap transmitter.

10. The circuit board according to claim 9 , further comprising:

a nonvolatile memory.

11. The circuit board according to claim 9 , wherein:

the at least one signal trace is connectable to a backplane.

12. The circuit board according to claim 9 , wherein:

a first one of the set of tap weights corresponds to a current bit in the digital sequence, and a second one of the set of tap weights corresponds to another bit in the digital sequence.

13. The circuit board according to claim 9 , wherein:

the indication includes a set of values for the set of tap weights.

14. The circuit board according to claim 9 , wherein:

the power constraint includes an average power constraint of the multi-tap transmitter.

15. The circuit board according to claim 9 , wherein:

the power constraint includes a peak power constraint of the multi-tap transmitter.

16. A circuit board comprising:

a signal path;

a first integrated circuit (IC) including a transmitter, the transmitter including multiple taps with respective tap weights, the transmitter operable to output a signal onto the signal path in accordance with the tap weights;

a second IC including a receiver to receive the signal from the signal path, the receiver operable to compare the signal to a target signal level to generate an indicator, the receiver to provide the indicator to the transmitter to update the tap weights; and

wherein the target signal level is based on a power constraint of the transmitter.

17. The circuit board according to claim 16 , wherein:

the power constraint includes an average power constraint of the transmitter.

18. The circuit board according to claim 16 , wherein:

the power constraint includes a peak power constraint of the transmitter.
