Abstract

A hunting arrow for tracking target animals is disclosed and described. The arrow can include a chamber. The arrow may also include a transmitter housing that is installable into the chamber. A pair of bores extending through the transmitter housing and chamber may be configured and adapted for receiving a pair of shear pins. The shear pins may secure the housing in the chamber. The transmitter housing may comprise an animal engagement member, such as a hook. The transmitter housing is ejected from the chamber when the arrow strikes a target animal and the hook stops the forward momentum of the transmitter housing with sufficient force to shear the shear pins, thereby ejecting and embedding the transmitter housing in the hide of the animal. The transmitter within the housing may broadcast the location of the animal to the hunter to enable easy tracking of the animal, if wounded.

Claims (41)

1. An apparatus for adding a payload to a hunting arrow, the hunting arrow having an arrow shaft terminating at a distal end, said apparatus comprising:

an insert configured and adapted to be coupled to the distal end of the arrow shaft;

a housing defining a compartment for receiving the payload;

at least one animal engagement member extending from said housing; and

a housing securement mechanism operable to removably secure the housing to the insert;

wherein the housing securement mechanism comprises a plastic deformable member and a protrusion; and

wherein the protrusion and the plastic deformable member interlock to removably secure the housing to the insert.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the plastic deformable member comprises a lip configured and dimensioned to engage the protrusion.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the plastic deformable member is cantilevered.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the plastic deformable member extends forwardly from the housing.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the protrusion extends from the insert.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the plastic deformable member comprises a pair of cantilevered portions.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , the protrusion and the plastic deformable member interlock define a snap fit connection.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the insert is configured and adapted to be installed between the distal end of the arrow shaft and a Broadhead.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a radio transmitter in the compartment of the housing.

10. An apparatus for tracking an animal, said apparatus comprising:

a hunting arrow having an arrow shaft extending from a proximal end to a distal end;

a broadhead attached to the distal end of the arrow shaft;

an insert attached to the hunting arrow and interposed between the broadhead and the distal end of the arrow shaft;

a housing defining a compartment;

a radio transmitter disposed within the compartment;

at least one animal engagement member extending from said housing; and

a housing securement mechanism comprising a plastic deformable member and a protrusion;

wherein the protrusion and the plastic deformable member interlock to thereby removably secure the housing to the insert.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the plastic deformable member comprises a lip configured and dimensioned to engage the protrusion.

12. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the plastic deformable member is cantilevered.

13. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the plastic deformable member extends forwards from the housing.

14. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the protrusion extends from the insert.

15. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the plastic deformable member comprises a pair of cantilevered portions.

16. The apparatus of claim 10 , the protrusion and the plastic deformable member interlock define a snap fit connection.

17. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the insert is configured and adapted to be installed between the distal end of the arrow shaft and a Broadhead.

18. The apparatus of claim 10 , further comprising a radio transmitter in the compartment of the housing.

19. An apparatus for adding a payload to a hunting arrow, the hunting arrow having an arrow shaft terminating at a distal end, said apparatus comprising:

an insert configured and adapted to be coupled to the distal end of the arrow shaft;

a housing defining a compartment for receiving the payload;

at least one animal engagement member extending from said housing; and

a housing securement mechanism operable to removably secure the housing to the insert;

wherein the housing securement member comprises a pair of plastic deformable members and a pair of protrusions; and

wherein the pair of protrusions and the pair of plastic deformable members interlock to removably secure the housing to the insert.

20. The apparatus of claim 19 , wherein the pair of plastic deformable members are separated by a gap.

21. The apparatus of claim 20 , wherein the pair of plastic deformable members extend forwardly from the housing and the pair of protrusions extend from the insert.
