Abstract

An electrode includes selenium, a selenium-containing compound, selenium-carbon composite, a selenium-containing compound-carbon composite, or a mixture thereof; a carbon electronic conductor; a binder; and a current collector; wherein: the electrode is a solid electrode.

Claims (27)

1. A rechargeable battery comprising an anode and a cathode, the cathode comprising:

elemental Se, Se 3 S, S—Li 2 Se, Se—Li 2 Se, Na 2 Se, Na 2 Se—Na 2 S, Na 2 Se—Se, Na x Li y S u Se v , or a mixture thereof wherein 0≤x, 0≤y, 0≤u≤1, 0<v≤1, and 0<(x+y);

a carbon electronic conductor;

a binder; and

a current collector;

wherein: the electrode is a solid electrode.

2. The rechargeable battery of claim 1 comprising elemental selenium.

The rechargeable battery of claim 1 , wherein the carbon electronic conductor comprises synthetic graphite, natural graphite, amorphous carbon, hard carbon, soft carbon, acetylene black, mesocarbon microbeads, carbon black, Ketjen black, mesoporous carbon, porous carbon matrix, carbon nanotube, carbon nanofiber, or graphene.

4. The rechargeable battery of claim 1 further comprising an electroactive transition metal chalcogenide, an electroactive conductive polymer, sulfur, or a sulfur-containing compound.

The rechargeable battery of claim 1 , wherein the binder comprises polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyethylene, polystyrene, polyethylene oxide, polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon), polyacrylonitrile, polyimide, styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), carboxy methyl cellulose (CMC), gelatine, a copolymer of any two or more such polymers, or a blend of any two or more such polymers.

6. The rechargeable battery of claim 1 , wherein the solid electrode is configured to operate at a temperature of less than 280° C.

7. The rechargeable battery of claim 6 , wherein the solid electrode is configured to operate at a temperature from about −100° C. to about 150° C.

8. An electrochemical device comprising an anode and a cathode, wherein the cathode comprises:

elemental Se, Se 3 S, S—Li 2 Se, Se—Li 2 Se, Na 2 Se, Na 2 Se—Na 2 S, Na 2 Se—Se, Na x Li y S u Se v , a selenium-carbon composite, or a mixture thereof wherein 0≤x, 0≤y, 0≤u≤1, 0<v≤1, and 0<(x+y),

a carbon electronic conductor;

a binder; and

a current collector;

wherein: the cathode is a solid cathode and the electrochemical device is a lithium primary battery, a lithium secondary battery, a sodium primary battery, a sodium secondary battery or a capacitor.

9. The electrochemical device of claim 8 , wherein the electrode is configured to operate at a temperature of less than 280° C.

10. The electrochemical device of claim 9 , wherein the electrode is configured to operate at a temperature from about −100° C. to about 150° C.

11. The electrochemical device of claim 8 further comprising an electrolyte and an anode.

12. The electrochemical device of claim 11 , wherein the electrolyte comprises a salt and a solvent.

13. A battery comprising an anode and a cathode, the cathode comprising at least one of:

elemental selenium;

a selenium-containing compound which is Li 2 Se, Se 3 S, S 2 Se, S m Se n (m+n >0), S—Li 2 Se, Se—Li 2 Se, Na 2 Se, Na 2 Se—Na 2 S, Na 2 Se—Se, or Na x Li y S u Se v ; wherein 0≤x, 0≤y, 0≤u≤1, 0<v≤1, and 0<(x+y); or

a carbon composite of elemental selenium or a carbon composite of the selenium-containing compound, wherein the carbon comprises synthetic graphite, natural graphite, amorphous carbon, hard carbon, soft carbon, acetylene black, MCMB, carbon black, Ketjen black, mesoporous carbon, porous carbon matrix, carbon nanotube, carbon nanofiber, or graphene;

wherein the cathode is a solid cathode.
