Abstract

A method of drilling a wellbore includes drilling the wellbore through a formation by injecting drilling fluid through a drill string and rotating a drill bit. The drill string includes a shifting tool, a receiver in communication with the shifting tool, and the drill bit. The method further includes retrieving the drill string from the wellbore through a casing string until the shifting tool reaches an actuator. The casing string includes an isolation valve in an open position and the actuator. The method further includes sending a wireless instruction signal to the receiver. The shifting tool engages the actuator in response to the receiver receiving the instruction signal. The method further includes operating the actuator using the engaged shifting tool, thereby closing the isolation valve and isolating the formation from an upper portion of the wellbore.

Claims (44)

1. An actuator for use in a wellbore, comprising:

a tubular housing having a bore formed therethrough;

a power source;

an antenna for receiving a wireless instruction signal;

an isolation valve downhole from the antenna, and comprising:

a flow tube; and

a closure member, wherein the closure member in a closed position blocks flow through the bore;

a controller in communication with the power source and the antenna;

a pump or piston operable to supply pressurized hydraulic fluid to the isolation valve, wherein the flow tube is operable to open or close the closure member in response to the isolation valve receiving the pressurized hydraulic fluid;

a position or proximity sensor in communication with the controller for determining a position of the isolation valve;

a lock operably connected to the pump or piston and the controller;

a manual override operable by engagement with a shifting tool of a drill string, wherein the manual override comprises a power sub operable by engagement with the shifting tool and the flow tube; and

wherein the controller is operable to release the lock in response to receiving the instruction signal.

2. The actuator of claim 1 , wherein the tubular housing includes upper and lower shoulders formed on inner surfaces thereof.

3. The actuator of claim 1 , wherein the proximity sensor is a contact switch.

4. The actuator of claim 1 , wherein the lock comprises a sleeve actuatable between a locked position and an unlocked position.

5. The actuator of claim 1 , wherein the power sub comprises a cleat movable between an engaged and a retracted position.

6. The actuator of claim 5 , wherein the tubular housing has a profile on an inner surface thereof for receiving the cleat.

7. An actuator for use in a wellbore, comprising:

a tubular housing having a bore formed therethrough;

a power source disposed within a wall of the tubular housing;

an antenna for receiving a wireless instruction signal, the antenna disposed within a wall of the tubular housing and coupled to the power source; and

a controller disposed within the wall of the tubular housing and in communication with the power source and the antenna;

an isolation valve downhole from the antenna, wherein in response to receiving the instruction signal, the controller is operable to actuate the isolation valve;

a position or proximity sensor proximate the bore of the tubular housing for directly sensing a position of the isolation valve, the sensor being in communication with the controller; and

wherein the antenna receives the wireless instruction signal from a wireless instruction tag embedded in a drill string disposed in the wellbore, and wherein the controller reports the position of the isolation valve to the wireless instruction tag.

8. The actuator of claim 7 , further comprising a pump or piston operable to supply pressurized hydraulic fluid to the isolation valve.

9. The actuator of claim 8 , further comprising a lock operably connected to the pump or piston and the controller.

10. The actuator of claim 7 , wherein the sensor comprises at least one of a proximity sensor and a contact switch for directly sensing an open or close position of a flapper.

11. The actuator of claim 7 , wherein the sensor comprises a position sensor for directly sensing a position of a flow tube.

12. The actuator of claim 7 , further comprising a manual override operable by engagement with a shifting tool of a drill string.

13. The actuator of claim 12 , wherein the manual override comprises a power sub operable by engagement with the shifting tool and a flow tube.

14. The actuator of claim 13 , wherein the power sub comprises a cleat movable between an engaged and a retracted position.

15. The actuator of claim 14 , wherein the tubular housing has a profile on an inner surface thereof for receiving the cleat.

16. An actuator for use in a wellbore, comprising:

a tubular housing having a bore formed therethrough;

a power source disposed within a wall of the tubular housing;

an antenna for receiving a wireless instruction signal, the antenna disposed within a wall of the tubular housing and coupled to the power source; and

a controller disposed within the wall of the tubular housing and in communication with the power source and the antenna;

an isolation valve downhole from the antenna, wherein in response to receiving the instruction signal, the controller is operable to actuate the isolation valve; and

wherein the antenna receives the wireless instruction signal from a wireless instruction tag embedded in a drill string disposed in the wellbore, and wherein the controller reports the position of the isolation valve to the wireless instruction tag.

17. The actuator of claim 16 , further comprising a pump or piston operable to supply pressurized hydraulic fluid to the isolation valve.

18. The actuator of claim 17 , further comprising a lock operably connected to the pump or piston and the controller.

19. The actuator of claim 16 , further comprising a manual override operable by engagement with a shifting tool of a drill string, wherein the manual override comprises a power sub operable by engagement with the shifting tool and a flow tube.
