Abstract

A radiation control system and method are provided in which radiation delivered to a patient and/or the operator of the equipment is minimized. The radiation control system may be used in a large variety of applications including applications in which radiation source is used to inspect an object, such as, for example, medical imaging, diagnosis and therapy, in manufacturing operation using radiation, in airports scanning systems, in different security setups, and in nuclear reactors automation and process control. The radiation control system and method may also be used with 3D imaging.

Claims (21)

1. A radiation control system comprising:

a region of interest (ROI) identification system comprising:

an attention monitoring system comprising:

an eye tracking device; and

a brain activity monitor; and

an attention monitoring module configured to determine ROIs by receiving input from the eye tracking device for determining gaze directions of an operator and from the brain activity monitor for determining attention of the operator.

2. The radiation control system of claim 1 , wherein the brain activity monitor comprises EEG electrodes.

3. The radiation control system of claim 1 , wherein the attention monitoring system further comprises a saccade detector.

4. The radiation control system of claim 1 further comprising a controller module comprising a radiation optimization module configured to receive an output from the attention monitoring module and to compute in real time optimal radiation parameters for each image segment within a field of view (FOV) of the operator.

5. The radiation system of claim 4 , wherein the FOV comprises at least one ROI and at least one background zone.

6. The radiation system of claim 4 , wherein the radiation optimization module is configured to compute optimal radiation parameters using an archived history of ROIs, radiated profiles, and associated timings.

7. A method for determining regions of interest (ROIs) in a radiation control system, the method comprising the steps of:

tracking eye movement and attention of an operator using an attention monitoring system comprising an eye tracking device and a brain activity monitor; and

determining ROIs using an attention monitoring module by determining gaze directions of the operator based on an output of the eye tracking device and by determining attention of the operator based on an output of the brain activity monitor.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the brain activity monitor comprises EEG electrodes.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the tracking step comprises tracking at least one of saccades and perclose.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the attention monitoring system comprises a saccade detector.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the attention monitoring system comprises a perclose detector.

12. The method of claim 7 further comprising the step of computing in real time optimal radiation parameters for each image segment within a field of view (FOV) of the operator.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the FOV comprises at least one ROI and at least one background zone.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the step of computing optimal radiation parameters comprises using an archived history of ROIs, radiated profiles, and associated timings.
