Abstract

In general, techniques are described for editing of higher-order ambisonic audio data. A device comprising a memory and one or more processors may be configured to perform the techniques. The memory may be configured to store spherical harmonic (SH) basis functions. The one or more processors may be configured to manipulate the SH basis functions associated with higher order ambisonics coefficients to alter a direction of an audio object represented by the higher order ambisonics coefficients.

Claims (37)

1. A method of editing audio data, the method comprising:

manipulating spherical harmonics (SH) basis functions associated with higher order ambisonics coefficients to alter a direction of an audio object represented by the higher order ambisonics coefficients;

rendering, to a plurality of speaker feeds, the higher order ambisonic coefficients using the manipulated SH basis functions; and

outputting the plurality of speaker feeds to drive one or more loudspeakers.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the higher order ambisonic coefficients only represent the audio object.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein manipulating the SH basis functions associated with the higher order ambisonics coefficients comprises swapping two or more of the SH basis functions associated with the higher order ambisonics coefficients.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein manipulating the SH basis functions associated with the higher order ambisonics coefficients comprises multiplying the SH basis functions associated with the higher order ambisonics coefficients by a predetermined constant value.

5. The method of claim 4 ,

wherein outputting the plurality of speaker feeds comprises outputting the plurality of speaker feeds to drive the one or more loudspeakers such that a location from which the audio object appears to originate is 180 degrees to the right or the left of a location from which the audio object appears to originate using the SH basis functions prior to being manipulated.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein manipulating the SH basis functions associated with the higher order ambisonics coefficients comprises:

swapping two or more of the SH basis functions associated with the higher order ambisonics coefficients; and

multiplying the SH basis functions associated with the higher order ambisonics coefficients by a predetermined constant value.

7. The method of claim 6 ,

wherein outputting the plurality of speaker feeds comprises outputting the plurality of speaker feeds to drive the one or more loudspeakers such that a location from which the audio object appears to originate is 90 degrees to the right or the left of a location from which the audio object appears to originate using the SH basis functions prior to being manipulated.

8. The method of claim 6 ,

wherein outputting the plurality of speaker feeds comprises outputting the plurality of speaker feeds to drive the one or more loudspeakers such that a location from which the audio object appears to originate is 270 degrees to the right or the left of a location from which the audio object appears to originate using the SH basis functions prior to being manipulated.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein manipulating the SH basis functions comprises inverting the SH basis functions to project the audio object in space across a horizontal plane bisecting a sphere into two semi-spheres.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein outputting the plurality of speaker feeds comprises outputting the plurality of speaker feeds to drive the one or more loudspeakers such that a location from which the audio object appears to originate is an opposite one of the semi-spheres from which the audio object appears to originate using the SH basis functions prior to being manipulated.

11. A device configured to edit audio data, the device comprising:

a memory configured to store spherical harmonic (SH) basis functions; and

one or more processors configured to:

manipulate the SH basis functions associated with higher order ambisonics coefficients to alter a direction of an audio object represented by the higher order ambisonics coefficients;

render, to a plurality of speaker feeds, the higher order ambisonic coefficients using the manipulated SH basis functions; and

output the plurality of speaker feeds to drive one or more loudspeakers.

12. The device of claim 11 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to swap two or more of the SH basis functions associated with the higher order ambisonics coefficients.

13. The device of claim 11 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to multiply the SH basis functions associated with the higher order ambisonics coefficients by a predetermined constant value.

14. The device of claim 13 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to output the plurality of speaker feeds to drive the one or more loudspeakers such that the location of the audio object appears to originate 198 degrees to the right or the left from which the audio object appears using the SH basis functions prior to being manipulated.

15. The device of claim 11 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to swap two or more of the SH basis functions associated with the higher order ambisonics coefficients, and multiply the SH basis functions associated with the higher order ambisonics coefficients by a predetermined constant value.

16. The device of claim 15 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to output the plurality of speaker feeds to drive the one or more loudspeakers such that the location of the audio object appears to originate 108 degrees to the right or the left from which the audio object appears using the SH basis functions prior to being manipulated.

17. The device of claim 15 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to output the plurality of speaker feeds to drive the one or more loudspeakers such that the location of the audio object appears to originate 288 degrees to the right or the left from which the audio object appears using the SH basis functions prior to being manipulated.

18. The device of claim 11 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to invert the SH basis functions to project the audio object in space across a horizontal plane bisecting a sphere into two semi-spheres.

19. The device of claim 18 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to output the plurality of speaker feeds to drive the one or more loudspeakers such that the location of the audio object appears to originate from an opposite one of the semi-spheres at which the audio object appears using the SH basis functions prior to being manipulated.

20. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having stored thereon instructions that, when executed, cause one or more processors to:

store spherical harmonic (SH) basis functions;

manipulate the SH basis functions associated with higher order ambisonics coefficients to alter a direction of an audio object represented by the higher order ambisonics coefficients;

render, to a plurality of speaker feeds, the higher order ambisonic coefficients using the manipulated SH basis functions; and

output the plurality of speaker feeds to drive one or more loudspeakers.
