Abstract

Medical devices suitable for implantation in spaces between bones are described. An example medical device suitable for use as an intervertebral spacer includes a main body having an exterior proximal wall, an exterior distal wall, a first exterior lateral wall, a second exterior lateral wall, an upper surface, a lower surface, an interior proximal wall, an interior distal wall, a first interior lateral wall, a second interior lateral wall, and a longitudinal axis. The interior proximal wall, the interior distal wall, the first interior lateral wall, and the second interior lateral wall cooperatively define an interior cavity. The first and second exterior lateral walls are outwardly directed at an angle from the lower surface to the upper surface relative to the longitudinal axis.

Claims (31)

1. An intervertebral spacer, comprising:

a main body comprising:

the first exterior lateral wall defining a first chamfered portion and a first groove extending from the first chamfered portion to the lower surface, the second exterior lateral wall defining a second chamfered portion and a second groove extending from the second chamfered portion to the lower surface, the first exterior lateral wall being at least partially disposed on a plane that is outwardly directed at a first angle from the lower surface to the first chamfered portion relative to the longitudinal axis, the first interior lateral wall being at least partially disposed on a plane that is outwardly directed at a second angle from the lower surface to the upper surface relative to the longitudinal axis;

wherein the first interior lateral wall does not define the first groove and the second interior lateral wall does not define the second groove;

wherein the first groove comprises a curvilinear surface of the first exterior lateral wall that curves radially outwardly from the lower surface to the first chamfered portion; and

wherein the second groove comprises a curvilinear surface of the second exterior lateral wall that curves radially outwardly from the lower surface to the second chamfered portion.

2. The intervertebral spacer of claim 1 , wherein the first angle is an angle between about 30° and about 75°.

3. The intervertebral spacer of claim 1 , wherein the first angle is an angle between about 42° and about 63°.

4. The intervertebral spacer of claim 1 , wherein the second angle is an angle between about 90° and about 125°.

5. The intervertebral spacer of claim 1 , wherein the second angle is an angle between about 98° and about 117°.

6. The intervertebral spacer of claim 1 , wherein the first groove has a substantially arcuate perimeter.

7. The intervertebral spacer of claim 6 , wherein the first groove is adjacent the first chamfered portion.

8. The intervertebral spacer of claim 1 , wherein the first groove is adjacent the first chamfered portion.

9. The intervertebral spacer of claim 1 , wherein the first groove has a first substantially arcuate perimeter and the second groove has a second substantially arcuate perimeter.

10. The intervertebral spacer of claim 9 , wherein the first groove is adjacent the first chamfered portion and the second groove is adjacent the second chamfered portion.

11. The intervertebral spacer of claim 1 , wherein the first exterior lateral wall defines a first portion of the first exterior lateral wall and a second portion of the first exterior lateral wall, the first portion of the first exterior lateral wall disposed between the first chamfered portion and the upper surface and the second portion of the first exterior lateral wall comprising the first groove.

12. The intervertebral spacer of claim 11 , wherein the second exterior lateral wall defines a first portion of the second exterior lateral wall and a second portion of the second exterior lateral wall, the first portion of the second exterior lateral wall disposed between the second chamfered portion and the upper surface and the second portion of the second exterior lateral wall comprising the second groove.

13. The intervertebral spacer of claim 12 , wherein the first portion of the first exterior lateral wall has a first height, a second height, and a third height relative to the longitudinal axis; and

wherein the first and third heights are greater than the second height.

14. The intervertebral spacer of claim 1 , wherein the lower surface is generally rounded trapezoidal in shape.

15. The intervertebral spacer of claim 14 , wherein the upper surface is rounded in shape.

16. The intervertebral spacer of claim 15 , wherein the lower surface defines a first generally rounded trapezoidal opening providing access to the interior cavity.

17. The intervertebral spacer of claim 16 , wherein the upper surface defines a second generally rounded trapezoidal opening providing access to the interior cavity.

18. An intervertebral spacer, comprising:

a main body comprising:
