Abstract

A secondary battery including a cathode having a primary cathode active material and an alkaline source material selected from the group consisting of Li 2 O, Li 2 O 2 , Li 2 S, LiF, LiCl, Li 2 Br, Na 2 O, Na 2 O 2 , Na 2 S, NaF, NaCl, and a mixture of any two or more thereof; an anode having an anode active material; an electrolyte; and a separator.

Claims (19)

1. A secondary battery comprising:

a cathode comprising a primary cathode active material and an alkaline source material selected from the group consisting of Li 2 O, Na 2 O, Na 2 O 2 , Na 2 S, NaF, NaCl, or a mixture of any two or more thereof;

an anode comprising an anode active material;

an electrolyte; and

a separator;

wherein the secondary battery is a sodium-ion battery, a sodium-sulfur battery, or a sodium-air battery.

2. The secondary battery of claim 1 , wherein the primary cathodic material comprises a sodiated material.

3. The secondary battery of claim 1 , wherein the primary cathodic material comprises NaM 1−x M′ x PO 4 , Na x M y M′ z O 2 , Na 2 FePO 4 F, Na 2 MnPO 4 F, NaFeSO 4 F, NaMnSO 4 F, NaV 1−a Cr a PO 4 F, Na 2 S, Na 2 Se, or a mixture of any two or more thereof, wherein 0<x; 0<y+z; M is Mn, Ni, Fe, Co, or Cu; M′ is Cr or Mg; and 0≦a≦1.

4. The secondary battery of claim 1 , wherein the primary cathode material comprises S.

5. The secondary battery of claim 1 , wherein the primary cathode material is air (oxygen).

6. The secondary battery of claim 1 , wherein the cathode further comprises a polymeric binder.

7. The secondary battery of claim 1 , wherein the anode active material is a carbon material, Si, Si—C, SiO, Sn, Sb, tin oxide, a tin carbon, a composite tin alloy, a transition metal oxide, or a mixture of any two or more thereof.

8. The secondary battery of claim 1 , wherein the anode active material comprises Si, Sn, SiO, Si—C, a tin oxide, a tin carbon, a carbon material, a composite tin alloy, a transition metal oxide, or a mixture of any two or more thereof.

9. The secondary battery of claim 1 , wherein the alkaline source material is present from about 1 wt % to about 40 wt %.

10. The secondary battery of claim 1 , wherein the alkaline source material is present from about 10 wt % to about 40 wt %.

11. The secondary battery of claim 1 , wherein the alkaline source material is present from about 5 wt % to about 10 wt %.

12. The secondary battery of claim 1 , wherein the cathode further comprises a non-lithiated material.

13. The secondary battery of claim 12 , wherein the non-lithiated material is selected from the group consisting of carbon materials, MnO 2 , S, V 2 O 5 , MnF 3 , and FeF 3 .

14. The secondary battery of claim 1 , wherein the alkaline source material comprises Li 2 O.
