Methods and systems for skin treatment
Systems and methods are provided for focused remodeling and downsizing the volume of subcutaneous lipid-rich cells, body contouring, and tightening skin tissue, using controlled heating of the targeted areas on the body. Electromagnetic energy heats skin layers or tissues to achieve an aesthetic effect. The electromagnetic energy may be applied via an applicator without touching the skin. A spacer of insulating or dielectric material may be provided between the applicator and the skin.
1. A method for skin treatment of a patient comprising:
positioning an applicator comprising at least one electrode adjacent to the skin of the patient, with the applicator spaced apart from the skin by an air gap, and with the applicator having a surface area of at least 15 cm 2 ;
providing airflow circulation between the applicator and the skin;
transmitting radio frequency waves from the applicator into the skin, with the radio frequency waves heating the skin; and
temporarily holding the applicator in a fixture so that the applicator is in a fixed position relative to the skin during at least part of the treatment process.
2. The method of claim 1 with the heating causing remodeling and/or downsizing of a volume of lipid-rich cells in subcutaneous tissue.
3. The method of claim 1 further including wherein the airflow circulation is a stream of air chilled to below ambient temperature.
4. The method of claim 1 wherein the applicator is flexible or includes a flexible electrode and further comprising shaping the applicator or the flexible electrode based on a shape of the patient.
5. The method of claim 1 wherein the applicator comprises at least two electrodes, further including switching at least one of the two electrodes off during the treatment.
6. The method of claim 1 with the applicator comprising two or more electrodes and with the radio frequency waves transmitted by the two or more electrodes having different phases.
7. The method of claim 1 further including using temperature feedback control.
8. A method for skin treatment of a patient comprising:
positioning an applicator comprising one or more electrodes adjacent to the skin of the patient, with the electrodes not in contact with the skin of the patient;
holding the applicator in a fixed position relative to the skin during at least part of the treatment, with none of the one or more electrodes contacting the skin;
transmitting radio frequency waves from the one or more electrodes into the skin while switching at least one of the one or more electrodes on and off, with the radio frequency waves heating the skin and;
providing airflow circulation between the one or more electrodes and the skin.
9. A method for skin treatment of a patient comprising:
positioning an applicator comprising one or more electrodes adjacent to the skin of the patient, with the electrodes not in contact with the skin of the patient;
holding the applicator in a fixed position relative to the skin during at least part of the treatment, with none of the one or more electrodes contacting the skin;
transmitting radio frequency waves from the one or more electrodes into the skin while switching at least one of the one or more electrodes on and off, with the radio frequency waves heating the skin; and
separating the one or more electrodes from the skin by an air gap.
