Abstract

A transdermal intraosseous device for coupling a bone stump to an external prosthetic device includes a bone fixator, an external connector and a plurality of modular interface components. The bone fixator includes a proximal portion configured for anchoring into the bone stump of the patient and a distal portion including a base collar configured for subcutaneous implantation. The external connector has a distal portion for coupling to the external prosthetic device and a proximal portion for coupling to the distal portion of the bone fixator. Each interface component can be removably coupled to the base collar and has different size and shape to provide a surgeon-selected transition between the prosthetic device and the patient's skin.

Claims (15)

1. A transdermal intraosseous device configured for coupling a bone stump of a patient to an external prosthetic device comprising:

a bone fixator including a distal portion and a proximal portion, the proximal portion configured for anchoring into the bone stump of the patient, wherein the distal portion of the bone fixator includes a well and a compliant member within the well, and a base collar configured for subcutaneous implantation;

an external connector having a distal portion couplable to the external prosthetic device and a proximal portion couplable to the distal portion of the bone fixator the external connector including a bore receiving the distal portion of the bone fixator via a taper-to-taper connection, wherein the external connector is removably connected to the distal portion of the bone fixator;

a sealing plug located in the bore of the external connector and at least partially in the well of the distal portion of the bone fixator, wherein the sealing plug has an interference fit with the well; and

a plurality of separate modular interface components, each interface component removably couplable to the base collar at least partially subcutaneously, wherein one or more of the plurality of separate modular interface components includes an annular or toroidal component sized and shaped to be placed on or over the base collar, and wherein the annular or toroidal component includes two semi-annular or semi-toroidal portions that can be coupled or snapped on or over the base collar, each interface component having a different size and shape configured to provide a surgeon-selectable transition between the external prosthetic device and skin of the patient.

2. The transdermal intraosseous device of claim 1 , wherein the compliant member is a spring.

3. The transdermal intraosseous device of claim 1 , wherein each modular interface component includes a porous layer.

4. The transdermal intraosseous device of claim 3 , wherein the proximal portion of the external connector is configured to terminate under the skin of the patient and under the porous layer of the modular interface component.

5. The transdermal intraosseous device of claim 1 , wherein the proximal portion of the bone fixator is configured to be received within an intramedullary canal of the patient.

6. The transdermal intraosseous device of claim 1 , further comprising an anchoring member having a proximal anchoring plug and an elongated shaft passing through the bone fixator and configured for pre-stressing the compliant member.

7. The transdermal intraosseous device of claim 1 , wherein the sealing plug comprises an elastomer.

8. The transdermal intraosseous device of claim 1 , wherein each modular interface component includes a porous layer, and wherein the taper-to-taper connection terminates outside the porous layer.

9. The transdermal intraosseous device of claim 1 , wherein the taper-to-taper connection terminates outside the patient's body distal of the interface component.

10. The transdermal intraosseous device of claim 1 , further comprising at least one O-ring positioned in a groove formed in the distal portion of the bone fixator.

11. The transdermal intraosseous device of claim 1 , further comprising at least one O-ring positioned in a groove formed in the sealing plug.
