Abstract

Embodiments herein are generally directed to expandable spinal implants, systems, apparatuses, and components thereof that can be used in spinal fusion and/or stabilization procedures, as well as methods of installation. The expandable spinal implants may be configured for lateral insertion.

Claims (31)

1. An expandable spinal implant comprising:

a stationary base member comprising an elongate slot, the elongate slot having a longitudinal axis parallel to a longitudinal axis of the stationary base member;

a movable base member comprising an angled slot, the angled slot having a longitudinal axis that intersects a longitudinal axis of the movable base member;

at least one cylindrical guide member comprising a first end configured to be reversibly received within the stationary base member and a second end configured to be received within the movable base member; and

an actuator comprising a first arm configured to slideably engage the elongated slot and a second arm configured to slideably engage the angle slot, respectively, wherein an end of the first arm of the actuator comprises a first projection, the first projection comprising an upper prong and a lower prong, wherein each of the upper and lower prongs extend in opposite directions at a 90 degree angle away from the first arm; and an end of the second arm of the actuator comprises a second projection, the second projection comprising an upper prong and a lower prong, wherein each of the upper and lower prongs of the second projection extend in opposite directions at a 90 degree angle away from the second arm.

2. The expandable spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein the expandable spinal implant comprises a plurality of cylindrical guide members.

3. The expandable spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein the actuator comprises a central member, the central member comprising a threaded bore extending therethrough.

4. An expandable spinal implant comprising:

a stationary base member comprising an elongate slot, the elongate slot comprising a longitudinal axis that is parallel to at least a portion of an inner side surface of the stationary base member;

a movable base member comprising an angled slot, the angled slot comprising a longitudinal axis that intersects an inner side surface of the moveable base member;

at least one cylindrical guide member comprising a first end configured to be reversibly received within the movable base member and a second end configured to be received within the stationary base member; and

an actuator comprising a first arm configured to slideably engage the elongate slot and a second arm configured to slideably engage the angled slot, respectively, wherein an end of the first arm of the actuator comprises a first projection, the first projection comprising an upper prong and a lower prong, wherein each of the upper and lower prongs extend in opposite directions at a 90 degree angle away from the first arm; and an end of the second arm of the actuator comprises a second projection, the second projection comprising an upper prong and a lower prong, wherein each of the upper and lower prongs of the second projection extend in opposite directions at a 90 degree angle away from the second arm.

5. The expandable spinal implant of claim 4 , wherein the angled slot of the movable base member comprises an opening that extends along the inner side surface thereof.

6. The expandable spinal implant of claim 4 , wherein the angled slot comprises a T-shaped transverse cross-section.

7. The expandable spinal implant of claim 4 , wherein the inner side surface of the movable base member comprises at least one receptacle, wherein the receptacle is configured to receive at least a portion of the at least one cylindrical guide member therein.

8. The expandable spinal implant of claim 4 , wherein the elongate slot of the stationary base member comprises an opening that extends along the inner side surface thereof.

9. The expandable spinal implant of claim 8 , wherein the opening extends at least partially along a trailing end of the stationary base member.

10. The expandable spinal implant of claim 4 , wherein the elongate slot comprises a T-shaped transverse cross-section.

11. The expandable spinal implant of claim 4 , wherein the inner side surface of the stationary base member comprises at least one receptacle, wherein the receptacle is configured to receive at least a portion of the at least one cylindrical guide member therein.

12. An expandable spinal implant comprising:

a stationary base member comprising a leading end, a trailing end, and a length therebetween, and further comprising an elongate slot extending at least partially along the length thereof, wherein the elongate slot extends parallel to the length of the stationary base member;

a movable base member comprising a leading end, a trailing end, and a length therebetween, and further comprising an angled slot extending at least partially along the length thereof, wherein the angled slot intersects at least one side surface of the movable base member;

at least one cylindrical guide member comprising a first end configured to be reversibly received within the movable base member and a second end configured to be received within the stationary base member; and

an actuator comprising a first arm configured to slideably engage the elongate slot and a second arm configured to slideably engage the angled slot, respectively, wherein an end of the first arm of the actuator comprises a first projection, the first projection comprising an upper prong and a lower prong, wherein each of the upper and lower prongs extend in opposite directions at a 90 degree angle away from the first arm; and an end of the second arm of the actuator comprises a second projection, the second projection comprising an upper prong and a lower prong, wherein each of the upper and lower prongs of the second projection extend in opposite directions at a 90 degree angle away from the second arm.

13. The implant of claim 12 , wherein the angled slot comprises a longitudinal axis that intersects an outer wall at the trailing end and an inner wall at the leading end.

14. The expandable spinal implant of claim 12 , wherein the leading end of the stationary base member is tapered, and wherein the tapered leading end comprises a tool-engaging recess.

15. The expandable spinal implant of claim 14 , wherein the tool-engaging recess passes longitudinally through the tapered leading end, and wherein the tool-engaging recess comprises an inner opening, an outer opening, and a narrowed passageway.

16. The expandable spinal implant of claim 15 , wherein the narrowed passageway comprises an axially-extending notch keyed to engage a driver.

17. The expandable spinal implant of claim 14 , wherein the tool-engaging recess comprises a longitudinal axis displaced posteriorly relative to a longitudinal axis of the elongate slot.

18. The expandable spinal implant of claim 14 , wherein the trailing end of the movable base member comprises a channel passing therethrough, wherein the channel is configured to receive a driver.
