Abstract

System and means soil stabilization and moisture control for building foundations including methods and systems for stabilization moisture in a site for building foundation by applying soil moisture stabilization material in various forms, a preferred stabilization material being a mixture of aluninosilicate Pozzolan mineral and granular material such as sand.

Claims (28)

1. A system to stabilize a moisture content of soil of a building foundation site, comprising:

a moisture stabilization material that, when incorporated into the soil, improves soil's ability to retain and transport moisture, wherein the moisture stabilization material includes a crystalline, porous aluminosilicate combined with a granular material;

a plurality of slugs filled with the moisture stabilization material, wherein the slugs are located within the building foundation site; and

a foundation irrigation system configured to deliver liquid to the slugs that contain the moisture stabilization material located within the building foundation site.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the slugs filled with moisture stabilization material are placed in the building foundation site prior to placement of a building foundation on the building foundation site.

3. The system of claim 2 wherein the moisture stabilization material is wetted prior to placement of the building foundation on the building foundation site.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the moisture stabilization material comprises porous aluminosilicate mineral Pozzolan.

5. The system of claim 1 , further comprising additional moisture stabilization material mixed into indigenous soil outside of the slugs, but on the building foundation site.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the moisture stabilization material that is disposed in the slug is encased in TYVEK flashspun high-density polyethylene fiber fabric.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the slugs include a perforated pipe or an open bottom pipe, and the perforated or open bottom pipe is encased in TYVEK flashspun high-density polyethylene fiber fabric placed in vertical holes.

The system of claim 1 wherein a building foundation having a perimeter is placed on the building site and water is supplied to the perimeter of the building foundation in perforated pipe encased in TYVEK flashspun high-density polyethylene fiber fabric laid in trenches around at least a portion of the perimeter.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein the foundation irrigation system comprises conduits extending from a controllable source of liquid to a position in the moisture stabilization material.

The system of claim 1 wherein a building foundation is placed on the building foundation site and the moisture stabilization material is placed adjacent to the building foundation on the building foundation site, and wherein a moisture barrier material is disposed in one or more positions not in direct contact with the building foundation.

11. A method for stabilizing moisture content of soil of a building site, comprising:

creating, within a perimeter of the building site, a plurality of slugs;

filling the slugs with a moisture stabilization material that improves the soil's ability to retain and transport moisture, wherein the moisture stabilization material includes a crystalline, porous aluminosilicate; and connecting the slugs to a foundation irrigation system that acts as a source of moisture for the moisture stabilization material in the slugs.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

grading the building site to provide a surface for a building foundation;

adding additional moisture stabilization material to the soil of the building site; and

controllably supplying a flow of moisture to at least some of the moisture stabilization material in the slugs.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

tilling the additional moisture stabilization material into the soil of the building site.

14. The method of claim 11 wherein the moisture stabilization material is also disposed in trenches on the building site.

15. The method of claim 11 wherein said filling the slugs with a moisture stabilization material includes disposing the moisture stabilization material in vertical holes encased in TYVEK flashspun high-density polyethylene fiber fabric.

16. The method of claim 11 wherein said filling the slugs with a moisture stabilization material includes disposing the moisture stabilization material in perforated pipe or an open bottom pipe encased in TYVEK flashspun high-density polyethylene fiber fabric placed in vertical holes.

The method of claim 12 , wherein said controllably supplying the flow of moisture to at least some of the moisture stabilization material in the slugs includes supplying water to a perimeter of the building foundation in perforated pipe encased in TYVEK flashspun high-density polyethylene fiber fabric laid in trenches around at least a portion of the perimeter.

18. The method of claim 11 , wherein said connecting the slugs to a foundation irrigation system includes adding conduits extending from a controllable source of liquid to a position in the moisture stabilization material.

The method of claim 12 , further comprising placing a liquid barrier layer in a location selected from a group of locations that includes: adjacent to but away from a side surface of the building foundation, under the additional soil stabilization material, over the additional soil stabilization material or any combination of the group of locations.
