Abstract

Glaucoma is the second most common cause of blindness in the global world. It is a multifactorial disease with several risk factors, of which intraocular pressure (IOP) is the most important. IOP measurements are used for glaucoma diagnosis and patient monitoring. IOP has wide diurnal fluctuation, and is dependent on body posture, so the occasional measurements done by the eye care expert in clinic can be misleading. We provide an implantable sensor, based on microfluidic principles, which in one example has 1 mmHg limit of detection, high sensitivity and excellent reproducibility. This sensor has an optical interface, which enables IOP to be read with, for example, a cell phone camera. The design, fabrication, along with the option of self-monitoring are promising steps toward better patient care and treatment for this devastating disease.

Claims (41)

1. An intra-ocular pressure monitoring device, comprising:

(a) a channel with a first open end and a second open end, and an inner diameter;

(b) a chamber connected to the second open end of the channel;

(c) a gas disposed in the chamber and disposed through the second open end up to a region of the channel; and

(d) a fluid disposed from the first open end up to the region of the channel establishing a fluid-gas equilibrium pressure interface within the channel,

wherein the inner diameter of the channel is sized capable of holding the fluid within the channel according to capillary forces,

wherein the intra-ocular pressure monitoring device is configured to be implantable in an eye, wherein the fluid in the channel via the open end would fluidically interface with an intra-ocular liquid such that the intra-ocular liquid effects the fluid-gas equilibrium pressure interface which is used for measuring an intra-ocular pressure.

2. The device as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the intra-ocular pressure monitoring device is configured to be embedded in an intra-ocular lens.

3. The device as set forth in claim 1 , wherein positions along the channel represents different measures of fluid-gas equilibrium pressure interfaces.

4. The device as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the inner diameter of the channel is 1 μm to 300 μm or a cross section of the inner diameter of the channel is 1 to 500 μm by 1 to 500 μm.

5. The device as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the channel has a length of 500 μm to 30 mm.

6. The device as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the ratio between the gas reservoir volume to the channel cross section is in between 5 μm to 10 4 μm.

7. The device as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the channel or the intra-ocular pressure monitoring device is coated to prevent leakage of the gas and/or fluid.

8. The device as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the channel is a straight channel, a serpentine-like channel, or a circular-shaped channel.

9. An intra-ocular pressure monitoring system, comprising:

(a) an intra-ocular monitoring device comprising:

(i) a channel with a first open end and a second open end, and an inner diameter;

(ii) a chamber connected to the second open end of the channel;

(iii) a gas disposed in the chamber and disposed through the second open end up to a region of the channel; and

(iv) a fluid disposed from the first open end up to the region of the channel establishing a fluid-gas equilibrium pressure interface within the channel,

wherein the inner diameter of the channel is sized capable of holding the fluid within the channel according to capillary forces,

wherein the intra-ocular pressure monitoring device is configured to be implantable in an eye, wherein the fluid in the channel via the open end would fluidically interface with an intra-ocular liquid such that the intra-ocular liquid effects the fluid-gas equilibrium pressure interface which is used for measuring an intra-ocular pressure;

(b) an imaging device to obtain an image of the channel; and

(c) an image analysis computer program executable on a computer readable medium to quantify the intra-ocular pressure from the obtained image and the fluid-gas equilibrium pressure interface, and outputting the quantified intra-ocular pressure to a user.

10. The system as set forth in claim 9 , wherein the intra-ocular pressure monitoring device is configured to be embedded in an intra-ocular lens.

11. The system as set forth in claim 9 , wherein positions along the channel represents different measures of fluid-gas equilibrium pressure interfaces.

12. The system as set forth in claim 9 , wherein the inner diameter of the channel is 1 μm to 300 μm or a cross section of the inner diameter of the channel is 1 to 500 μm by 1 to 500 μm.

13. The system as set forth in claim 9 , wherein the channel has a length of 500 μm to 30 mm.

14. The system as set forth in claim 9 , wherein the ratio between the gas reservoir volume to the channel cross section is in between 5 μm to 10 4 μm.

15. The device as set forth in claim 9 , wherein the channel or the intra-ocular pressure monitoring device is coated to prevent leakage of the gas and/or fluid.

16. The device as set forth in claim 9 , wherein the channel is a straight channel, a serpentine-like channel, or a circular-shaped channel.

17. A method of monitoring intra-ocular pressure, comprising:

(a) implanting an intra-ocular monitoring device in an eye, wherein the intra-ocular monitoring device comprises:

(i) a channel with a first open end and a second open end, and an inner diameter;

(ii) a chamber connected to the second open end of the channel;

(iii) a gas disposed in the chamber and disposed through the second open end up to a region of the channel; and

(iv) a fluid disposed from the first open end up to the region of the channel establishing a fluid-gas equilibrium pressure interface within the channel,

wherein the inner diameter of the channel is sized capable of holding the fluid within the channel according to capillary forces,

wherein the intra-ocular pressure monitoring device is configured to be implantable in an eye, wherein the fluid in the channel via the open end would fluidically interface with an intra-ocular liquid such that the intra-ocular liquid effects the fluid-gas equilibrium pressure interface which is used for measuring an intra-ocular pressure;

(b) obtaining an image of the channel with an imaging device; and
