Antimicrobial compositions and related methods of use
Antimicrobial compositions comprising one or more compound components generally recognized as safe for human consumption, and related methods of use, such compositions and methods as can be employed in a wide range of agricultural, industrial, building, pharmaceutical, personal care and/or animal care products and applications.
1. A composition comprising propanoic acid; and a component selected from a C 4 -C 6 acid salt, a C 2 -C 5 acid ester, a C 2 -C 8 aldehyde and combinations thereof, providing said C 4 salt is a salt of isobutyric acid and said composition is absent naphthalene and azulene derivative compounds.
2. The composition of claim 1 wherein said acid salt is selected from salts of isobutyric acid, salts of citric acid and combinations thereof.
3. The composition of claim 2 wherein said acid salt is selected from salts of isobutyric acid and combinations thereof.
4. The composition of claim 3 wherein said salt is selected from potassium and ammonium salts of isobutyric acid.
5. The composition of claim 1 wherein said ester is selected from esters of a C 4 acid and combinations thereof.
6. The composition of claim 1 wherein said aldehyde is benzaldehyde.
7. The composition of claim 1 comprising a C 2 -C 6 acid in addition to said propanoic acid.
8. The composition of claim 7 wherein said acid is selected from acetic acid, isobutyric acid, citric acid and combinations thereof.
9. The composition of claim 1 wherein said acid salt is selected from potassium and ammonium salts of isobutyric acid.
10. The composition of claim 9 comprising an acid in addition to said propanoic acid, said additional acid selected from acetic acid, isobutyric acid, citric acid and combinations thereof.
11. The composition of claim 1 comprising propanoic acid and at least one C 2 -C 5 acid ester.
12. The composition of claim 11 comprising at least one C 4 acid ester.
13. The composition of claim 11 comprising an acid in addition to said propanoic acid, said additional acid selected from acetic acid, isobutyric acid, citric acid and combinations thereof.
14. A composition comprising propanoic acid and at least one C 4 -C 6 acid salt, providing said C 4 salt is a salt of isobutyric acid.
15. The composition of claim 14 wherein said acid salt is selected from salts of isobutyric acid, salts of citric acid and combinations thereof.
16. The composition of claim 15 wherein said acid salt is a salt of isobutyric acid.
17. The composition of claim 16 wherein said acid salt is selected from potassium and ammonium salts of isobutyric acid.
18. The composition of claim 14 comprising an acid in addition to the said propanoic acid, said additional acid selected from C 2 -C 6 acids and combinations thereof.
19. The composition of claim 18 wherein said additional acid is selected from acetic acid, isobutyric acid, citric acid and combinations thereof.
20. The composition of claim 19 selected from a composition consisting essentially of propanoic acid and a salt of isobutyric acid; and a composition consisting essentially of propanoic acid, a salt of isobutyric acid and at least one of acetic acid and citric acid.
21. An article of manufacture comprising a composition selected from compositions of claim 1 , compositions of claim 14 and combinations of said compositions.
22. The article of claim 21 selected from a human food product, an animal food product, a packaging product and a solid carrier component.
23. The article of claim 22 wherein said solid carrier comprises a clay.
24. The article of claim 22 wherein said human food product is selected from processed foods.
25. The article of claim 24 selected from dairy products.
26. An article of manufacture selected from processed human food products, said article comprising a composition selected from compositions of claim 1 , compositions of claim 14 and combinations of said compositions.
27. The article of claim 26 comprising a cheese product.
28. A composition comprising propanoic acid; and a component selected from isoamyl acetate, isobutyl isobutyrate, allyl acetate, benzaldehyde, a salt of isobutyric acid and combinations thereof, providing said composition is absent naphthalene and azulene derivative compounds.
29. A composition comprising propanoic acid and at least one C 4 -C 6 acid salt, providing said C 4 salt is a potassium salt of isobutyric acid.
30. The composition of claim 29 comprising a salt selected from salts of citric acid and combinations thereof.
31. The composition of claim 29 comprising an acid in addition to the said propanoic acid, said additional acid selected from C 2 -C 6 acids and combinations thereof.
32. The composition of claim 31 wherein said additional acid is selected from acetic acid, isobutyric acid, citric acid and combinations thereof.
33. The composition of claim 32 selected from a composition consisting essentially of propanoic acid and a potassium salt of isobutyric acid; and a composition consisting essentially of propanoic acid, a potassium salt of isobutyric acid and at least one of acetic acid and citric acid.
34. An article of manufacture selected from processed human food products, said article comprising a composition selected from compositions of claim 29 and combinations of said compositions.
35. The article of claim 34 comprising a cheese product.
36. The composition of claim 1 applied to a substrate selected from fruits, nuts and vegetables.
