Abstract

A visual prosthesis configured to convert a video image to stimulation patterns for stimulating visual neural tissue including a camera configured to obtain a video image, a video processing unit configured to receive the image from the camera and create stimulation patterns based upon the image, an implantable stimulation system suitable to stimulate visual neural tissue according to the stimulation patterns, a wireless communication system configured to send a stimulation signal from the video processing unit to the implantable stimulation system, and a voltage and current monitoring circuit in the video processing unit monitoring the stimulation signal sent by the video processing unit.

Claims (14)

1. A visual prosthesis configured to convert a video image to stimulation patterns for stimulating visual neural tissue comprising:

a camera configured to obtain a video image;

a video processing unit configured to receive the video image from the camera and create stimulation patterns based upon the video image and configured to be external to a user's body;

an implantable stimulation system configured to stimulate visual neural tissue according to the stimulation patterns and configured to be implanted within the user's body;

a wireless communication system, configured to provide wireless communication between the video processing unit and the implantable stimulation system, configured to receive stimulation patters from the video processing unit and send a wireless signal including the stimulation patterns from the video processing unit to the implantable stimulation unit; and

a voltage and current monitoring circuit in the video processing unit monitoring the voltage and current of the wireless signal sent by the wireless communication system to the implantable stimulation system.

2. The visual prosthesis according to claim 1 , wherein the voltage and current monitoring circuit measures RF voltage of the signal including stimulation patters.

3. The visual prosthesis according to claim 2 , further comprising an analog to digital converter coupled to the voltage and current monitoring circuit, and providing a digital representation of the RF voltage.

4. The visual prosthesis according to claim 2 , further comprising a voltage buffer coupled between the voltage and current monitoring circuit and the analog to digital converter.

5. The visual prosthesis according to claim 2 , further comprising a voltage divider coupled between the voltage buffer and the analog to digital converter.

6. The visual prosthesis according to claim 2 , wherein the analog to digital converter is configured to measure voltage differences between 0 and 11.5 volts.

7. The visual prosthesis according to claim 2 , wherein the analog to digital converter is configured to measure voltage differences of 43.32 millivolts.

8. The visual prosthesis according to claim 1 , wherein the wireless communication system provides for a telemetry signal sent from the implantable stimulation system and received by the video processing unit including operational data.

9. The visual prosthesis according to claim 8 , wherein the operational data includes the RF voltage received by the implantable stimulation system.
