Abstract

A chitosan solution is formed from chitin, which is a homopolymer of beta (1-4)-linked N-acetyl-D-glucosamine. Rinsed, dried and ground chitin undergoes a process of deacetylation to convert some N-acetyl glucosamine to glucosamine, a primary component of chitosan. The chitosan solution is prepared by mixing 5chitosan with a alpha-hydroxy acid such as glycolic acid. An aqueous chelated silver solution is prepared by mixing silver oxide with a carboxylic acid such as citric acid. The chitosan solution can then be mixed with the silver solution resulting in a cationic complex. The cationic complex of the present invention may then be electrostatically bonded with generally negatively charged surfaces. In use, citrate promotes uptake of the silver by microbes. The antimicrobial complex can be applied via several methods of application, including an impregnated wipe, a foam, a gel, a spray, a lotion and an ointment.

Claims (24)

1. An aqueous non-colloidal cationic composition comprising water and a silver-chitosan complex, the silver-chitosan complex comprising:

a silver chelate, wherein the silver chelate is a silver carboxylate complex; and

cationic chitosan, wherein the silver-chitosan complex is cationic,

wherein the composition is non-colloidal and cationic, and

wherein the composition comprises silver in an amount of about 1 ppm to 2000 ppm silver.

2. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises about 1 ppm to 1000 ppm silver.

3. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises about 1 ppm to 100 ppm silver.

4. The composition of claim 1 , wherein said composition is provided in the form of a liquid, a lotion, a gel, a spray, a foam, and/or an ointment.

5. The composition of claim 4 , wherein the composition is a liquid and the liquid is a detergent, a shampoo, a conditioner, a hand sanitizer, a body wash, a deodorant, and/or a carpet shampoo.

6. The composition of claim 1 , wherein said composition is impregnated in a bandage, a dryer sheet, and/or a wipe.

7. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition further comprises a foaming agent selected from the group consisting of an agave derivative, and a salt free surfactant.

8. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition further comprises a botanical selected from the group consisting of aloe vera and chamomile.

9. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the silver-chelate is colorless.

10. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the silver-chitosan complex is a bio-adhesive.

11. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the silver carboxylate complex is a silver citrate complex.

12. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition is a solution.

13. A method of treating a wound or burn, comprising administering a therapeutically effective amount of the composition of claim 1 to a subject in need thereof.

14. A method of disinfecting a surface, skin and/or a fabric, comprising applying an effective amount of the composition of claim 1 to said surface, skin and/or fabric.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the composition is applied to said fabric and said fabric is clothing and/or carpet.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the composition is applied to said surface and said surface is porous.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the composition is applied to said surface and said surface is non-porous.

18. The method of claim 14 , wherein said composition is provided in the form of a liquid, a lotion, a gel, a spray, a foam, and/or an ointment.

19. The method of claim 14 , wherein the composition is a liquid and the liquid is a detergent, a shampoo, a conditioner, a hand sanitizer, a body wash, a deodorant, and/or a carpet shampoo.

20. The method of claim 14 , wherein said composition is impregnated in a bandage, a dryer sheet that is contacted with the surface, skin and/or fabric.
