MCAM as a biomarker for fluid homeostasis
The application discloses MCAM as a new biomarker for fluid homeostatic imbalance; methods for predicting, diagnosing, prognosticating and/or monitoring fluid homeostatic imbalance based on measuring said biomarker; and kits and devices for measuring said biomarker and/or performing said methods.
1. A method for identifying dyspneic patients having acute heart failure (AHF) due to reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) function wherein the method comprises:
a) obtaining a serum or plasma sample from a dyspneic patient;
b) measuring the level of SEQ ID NO: 2 in the serum or plasma sample;
c) identifying the dyspneic patient as having AHF with reduced LVEF when the level of SEQ ID NO: 2 is higher than the level of SEQ ID NO: 2 in a serum or plasma sample obtained from a dyspneic AHF patient with preserved LVEF function; and
d) treating the identified dyspneic patient having AHF with reduced LVEF of step c, wherein the treatment comprises administering one or more selected from the group consisting of diuretics, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors and inotropic drugs, wherein treatment with calcium channel blockers is avoided and wherein the treatment reduces the serum or plasma MCAM level in the patient.
