Abstract

There are provided methods and apparatus for multi-view video coding. A video encoder includes an encoder for encoding a block in a picture by choosing between temporal prediction and cross-view prediction to enable a prediction for the block. The picture is one of a set of pictures corresponding to multi-view video content and having different view points with respect to a same or similar scene. The picture represents one of the different view points. A high-level syntax is used to indicate the use of cross-view prediction for the block.

Claims (42)

1. A video encoding method, comprising:

encoding a first block in a picture using one of temporal prediction and cross-view prediction, the picture being one picture of a set of pictures corresponding to multi-view video content, the picture representing one of the different view points; and

signaling a disparity vector for the first block and a motion vector for a second block in the picture,

wherein a high-level syntax is used to indicate the use of cross-view prediction for the first block,

wherein said encoding mixes the disparity vector for the first block and the motion vector for the second block in the picture, in a single vector field, and

wherein a block-level syntax is used to indicate whether motion compensation or disparity compensation is applied to the first block.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein one of a motion vector and a disparity vector, but not both of the motion vector and the disparity vector, is signaled for a block in the picture.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the high-level syntax comprises a slice-level syntax.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein a motion vector for a block is used in the vector field when motion compensation is used for the block and a disparity vector is used when disparity compensation is used for the block.

5. An apparatus, comprising at least a memory and one or more processors, the one or more processor being configured to:

encode a first block in a picture using one of temporal prediction and cross-view prediction, the picture being one picture of a set of pictures corresponding to multi-view video content, the picture representing one of the different view points,

signal a disparity vector for the first block and a motion vector for a second block in the picture,

wherein a high-level syntax is used to indicate the use of cross-view prediction for the first block,

wherein said encoding mixes the disparity vector for the first block and the motion vector for the second block in the picture, in a single vector field, and

wherein a block-level syntax is used to indicate whether motion compensation or disparity compensation is applied to the first block.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein one of a motion vector and a disparity vector, but not both of the motion vector and the disparity vector, is signaled for a block in the picture.

7. The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the high-level syntax comprises a slice-level syntax.

8. The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein a motion vector for a block is used in the vector field when motion compensation is used for the block and a disparity vector is used when disparity compensation is used for the block.

9. An apparatus, comprising at least a memory and one or more processors, the one or more processor being configured to:

decode a first block in a picture by choosing between temporal prediction and cross-view prediction to enable a prediction for the first block, the picture being one of a set of pictures corresponding to multi-view video content, the picture representing one of the different viewpoints, wherein a high-level syntax is read to determine the use of cross-view prediction for the first block; and

decode a disparity vector for the first block and a motion vector for a second block in the picture,

wherein the disparity vector for the first block and the motion vector for the second block are mixed in a single vector field, and

wherein a block-level syntax is used to indicate whether motion compensation or disparity compensation is applied to the first block.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein one of a motion vector and a disparity vector, but not both of the motion vector and the disparity vector, is decoded for a block in the picture.

11. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the high-level syntax comprises a slice-level syntax.

12. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein a motion vector for a block is used in the vector field when motion compensation is used for the block and a disparity vector is used when disparity compensation is used for the block.

13. An apparatus, comprising at least a memory and one or more processors, the one or more processors being configured to:

transmit a first block in a picture, the first block being encoded using one of temporal prediction and cross-view prediction, the picture being one picture of a set of pictures corresponding to multi-view video content, the picture representing one of the different view points;

transmit a disparity vector for the first block and a motion vector for a second block in the picture, wherein the disparity vector for the first block and a motion vector for a second block are mixed in a single vector field;

transmit a high-level syntax that indicates the use of cross-view prediction for the first block; and

transmit a block-level syntax that indicates whether motion compensation or disparity compensation is applied to the first block.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein one of a motion vector and a disparity vector, but not both of the motion vector and the disparity vector, is signaled for a block in the picture.

15. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the high-level syntax comprises a slice-level syntax.

16. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein a motion vector for a block is used in the vector field when motion compensation is used for the block and a disparity vector is used when disparity compensation is used for the block.

17. A non-transitory processor readable medium having stored thereon an encoded bitstream, the encoded bitstream comprising:

a first block in a picture, the first block being encoded using one of temporal prediction and cross-view prediction, the picture being one picture of a set of pictures corresponding to multi-view video content, the picture representing one of the different view points;

a high-level syntax that indicates the use of cross-view prediction for the first block,

wherein a disparity vector for the first block and a motion vector for a second block in the picture are mixed in a single vector field; and

a block-level syntax that indicates whether motion compensation or disparity compensation is applied to the first block.

18. The medium of claim 17 , wherein one of a motion vector and a disparity vector, but not both of the motion vector and the disparity vector, is signaled for a block in the picture.

19. The medium of claim 17 , wherein the high-level syntax comprises a slice-level syntax.

20. The medium of claim 17 , wherein a motion vector for a block is used in the vector field when motion compensation is used for the block and a disparity vector is used when disparity compensation is used for the block.
