Abstract

An end effector assembly for use with an instrument for sealing and cutting tissue includes a pair of opposing first and second jaw members movable relative to the to grasp tissue therebetween. Each jaw member including a jaw housing and an electrically conductive surface adapted to connect to a source of electrosurgical energy such that the electrically conductive surfaces are capable of conducting electrosurgical energy through tissue held therebetween to effect a tissue seal. One of the electrically conductive surfaces including a channel defined therein and extending along a length thereof that communicates with a nozzle disposed in the jaw housing. The nozzle is configured to direct high pressure fluid from a fluid source into the channel for cutting tissue grasped between the jaw members.

Claims (25)

1. An end-effector assembly for use with an electrosurgical instrument, comprising:

a pair of opposing jaw members, at least one of the jaw members configured to move relative to the other jaw member from a first position in spaced relation relative to the other jaw member to a second position wherein the jaw members cooperate to grasp tissue therebetween, at least one of the jaw members configured to apply electrosurgical energy to the tissue grasped therebetween to effect a tissue seal; and

an elongated perforation strip disposed on at least one of the opposed jaw members configured to perforate tissue upon closure of the opposed jaw members against tissue.

2. The end-effector assembly of claim 1 , wherein the elongated perforation strip is centrally disposed on at least one of the opposed jaw members.

3. The end-effector assembly of claim 1 , wherein the elongated perforated strip is further configured to facilitate manual separation of tissue along the tissue seal after application of electrosurgical energy.

4. The end-effector assembly of claim 1 , wherein the elongated perforation strip extends inwardly from an electrically-conductive surface of the at least one jaw member.

5. The end-effector assembly of claim 1 , wherein both of the opposed jaw members are movable relative to one another from the first position to the second position.

6. The end-effector assembly of claim 1 , wherein both of the opposed jaw members include electrically-conductive surfaces and are coupled to a source of electrosurgical energy such that the opposed jaw members are capable of conducting electrosurgical energy through tissue held therebetween to effect the tissue seal.

7. The end-effector assembly of claim 1 , wherein the elongated perforation strip is formed of an electrically-conductive material.

8. The end-effector assembly of claim 1 , wherein the elongated perforation strip is formed of an insulative material.

9. The end-effector assembly of claim 1 , wherein the elongated perforation strip is formed of a reactive material configured to generate heat during activation of the at least one jaw members to facilitate perforation of tissue.

10. The end-effector assembly of claim 1 , wherein each of the opposed jaw members includes an electrically-conductive surface and an elongated perforation strip that extends inwardly from the electrically-conductive surfaces thereof.

11. The end-effector assembly of claim 10 , wherein the elongated perforation strips are configured to intermesh with one another upon closure of the opposing jaw members against tissue and activation of the electrically conductive surfaces to effect the tissue seal.

12. The end-effector assembly of claim 11 , wherein the elongated perforation strips include a series of teeth configured to intermesh with one another upon closure of the opposing jaw members.

13. The end-effector assembly of claim 10 , wherein the elongated perforation strips are configured to align in vertical registration relative to one another.

14. The end-effector assembly of claim 1 , wherein the elongated perforation strip is configured to perforate tissue along a center line of an electrically conductive surface of at least one of the jaw members.

15. The end-effector assembly of claim 1 , wherein the opposed jaw members are configured to apply a closure pressure of about 3 kg/cm 2 to about 16 kg/cm 2 in the second position.

16. A method of treating tissue, comprising:

grasping tissue between a pair of opposing jaw members, at least one of the jaw members including an elongated perforation strip centrally disposed thereon configured to perforate the tissue along a perforated tissue line;

transmitting energy from an electrosurgical energy source to at least one of the jaw members to activate an electrically-conductive surface thereof and conduct electrosurgical energy through the tissue grasped therebetween to effect a tissue seal;

opening the jaw members to expose the tissue; and

separating the tissue along the perforated tissue line.

17. The method of treating tissue of claim 16 , further including heating a reactive material of the elongated perforation strip during activation of the electrically-conductive surface to facilitate perforation of tissue.

18. The method of treating tissue of claim 16 , wherein the transmitting of electrosurgical energy to at least one of the jaw members facilitates perforating the tissue along the perforated tissue line.

19. The method of treating tissue of claim 16 , wherein the elongated perforation strip perforates tissue along the perforated tissue line upon the grasping thereof.
