Abstract

A Robotic control system has a wand, which emits multiple narrow beams of light, which fall on a light sensor array, or with a camera, a surface, defining the wand's changing position and attitude which a computer uses to direct relative motion of robotic tools or remote processes, such as those that are controlled by a mouse, but in three dimensions and motion compensation means and means for reducing latency.

Claims (21)

1. A method of conveying information regarding latency between motion of an operator instrument and motion of a tool in a remote process controlled by the operator instrument, the method comprising:

displaying to an operator of the operator instrument an image of the tool and at least a portion of the remote process surrounding the tool in a direction of motion of the tool, and

overlaying on the displayed image, an image of the tool in a pose requested by operator motion of the operator instrument as determined by a controller, such that the operator can see an image of the actual pose of the tool and the requested pose of the tool.

2. A non-transitory computer readable medium storing program instructions executable by one or more processors in one or more computers for causing the computers to implement the method of claim 1 .

3. A method of conveying information regarding latency between motion of an operator instrument of a surgical robot and motion of a tool of the surgical robot controlled by the operator instrument, the method comprising:

displaying on a display visible to an operator of the operator instrument, an image of the tool and at least a portion of a surgical field surrounding the tool in a direction of motion of the tool, and

overlaying on the displayed image, an image of the tool in a pose requested by operator motion of the operator instrument as determined by a controller, such that the operator can see an image of the actual pose of the tool, and the requested pose of the tool.

4. A non-transitory computer readable medium storing program instructions executable by one or more processors in one or more computers for causing the computers to implement the method of claim 3 .

5. A method of controlling latency between motion of an operator instrument and motion of a tool in a remote process controlled by the operator instrument, the method comprising the steps of:

acquiring an original image of the tool and at least a portion of a surgical field surrounding the tool in a direction of motion of the tool, and

displaying the original image to an operator of the operator instrument,

acquiring an instruction from the operator instrument using a controller, the instruction for moving the tool to an instructed pose relative to the original image,

transmitting the instruction and information to identify the original image to the remote process,

acquiring an updated image of the tool and the at least a portion of a surgical field surrounding the tool in a direction of motion of the tool,

performing pattern recognition at the remote process on the image identified by the transmitted information and the updated image to determine a desired pose of the tool relative to the updated image that corresponds to the instructed pose on the original image, and

moving the tool to the desired pose.

6. The method of claim 5 further comprising:

the step of storing the original image at the remote process after the step of acquiring the original image, and

the step of recalling the original image at the remote process before performing pattern recognition.

7. A non-transitory computer readable medium storing program instructions executable by one or more processors in one or more computers for causing the computers to implement the method of claim 6 .

8. A non-transitory computer readable medium storing program instructions executable by one or more processors in one or more computers for causing the computers to implement the method of claim 5 .
