Abstract

One embodiment of the present invention sets forth a technique for displaying scenes included in media assets. The technique includes selecting a first scene included in a first video asset based on one or more preferences and metadata associated with multiple scenes. The first video asset is one of multiple video assets, and each scene included in the multiple scenes is included in one of the video assets included in the multiple video assets. The technique further includes displaying the first scene within a first portion of a display area.

Claims (55)

1 . A method, comprising:

selecting a first scene included in a first video asset based on one or more preferences and metadata associated with a plurality of scenes, wherein the first video asset is included in a plurality of video assets, and each scene included in the plurality of scenes is included in one of the video assets included in the plurality of video assets; and

displaying the first scene within a first portion of a display area.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising causing the size of the first portion of the display area to increase over time.

3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

predicting a loss of interest in the first video asset;

in response, causing the size of the first portion of the display area to decrease;

selecting a second scene included in a second video asset based on the one or more preferences and the metadata; and

displaying the second scene in a second portion of the display area.

4 . The method of claim 3 , further comprising causing, over time, the size of the first portion of the display area to decrease and the size of the second portion of the display area to increase.

5 . The method of claim 3 , wherein predicting the loss of interest comprises preparing to display a third scene included in the first video asset within the first portion of the display area, and determining that the third scene includes one or more ending credits.

6 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

predicting an increase of interest in the first video asset;

in response, causing the size of the first portion of the display area to increase; and

displaying a second scene included in the first video asset within the first portion of the display area.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more preferences are based on at least one of one or more explicit settings and one or more historical viewing statistics.

8 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

selecting a second scene included in a second video asset based on the one or more preferences and the metadata; and

displaying the second scene within the first portion of the display area.

9 . A computer-readable storage medium including instructions that, when executed by a processing unit, cause the processing unit to perform the steps of:

selecting a first scene included in a first video asset based on one or more preferences and metadata associated with the first scene; and

displaying the first scene within a first portion of a display area.

10 . The computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , further comprising causing the size of the first portion of the display area to increase over time.

11 . The computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , further comprising:

selecting a second scene included in the first video asset based on the one or more preferences and metadata associated with the second scene; and

displaying the second scene within the first portion of the display area.

12 . The computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the metadata includes information associated with at least one of a genre, an actor, an actress, a quality rating, a motion picture rating system, a resolution, a popularity, a location, and a length.

13 . The computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , further comprising:

predicting a loss of interest in the first video asset;

in response, causing the size of the first portion of the display area to decrease;

selecting a second scene included in a second video asset based on the one or more preferences and metadata associated with the second scene; and

displaying the second scene in a second portion of the display area.

14 . The computer-readable storage medium of claim 13 , further comprising causing, over time, the size of the first portion of the display area to gradually decrease and the size of the second portion of the display area to gradually increase.

15 . The computer-readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein predicting the loss of interest comprises preparing to display a third scene included in the first video asset within the first portion of the display area, and determining that the third scene includes one or more ending credits.

16 . The computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , further comprising:

detecting an increase of interest in the first video asset;

in response, selecting a second scene included in the first video asset based on a meaningfulness of the second scene;

causing the size of the first portion of the display area to increase; and

displaying the second scene within the first portion of the display area.

17 . A video asset server comprising:

a memory storing a video asset engine; and

a processor coupled to the memory, wherein, when executed by the processor, the video asset engine configures the processor to:

select a first scene included in a first video asset based on one or more preferences and metadata associated with a plurality of scenes,

wherein the first video asset is included a plurality of video assets, and

each scene included in the plurality of scenes is included in one of the video assets included in the plurality of video assets; and

cause a consumer device to display the first scene within a first portion of a display area.

18 . The video asset server of claim 17 , wherein the video asset engine is further configured to:

detect an increase of interest in the first video asset;

in response, select a second scene included in the first video asset based on a meaningfulness of the second scene; and

cause the consumer device to display the second scene within a second portion of the display area that is larger than the first portion of the display area.

19 . The video asset server of claim 18 , wherein selecting the second scene comprises identifying a scene that is associated with an unwatched state.

20 . The video asset server of claim 17 , wherein the video asset engine is further configured to:

detect a loss of interest in the first video asset;

in response, select a second scene included in a second video asset based on the one or more preferences and the metadata; and

cause the consumer device to display the second scene within a second portion of the display area.
