Abstract

An incident recorder records original and supplemental incident information using a simplified user interface.

Claims (89)

1. A method for controlling a video recorder, which is configured to be worn on a person, of a primary subsystem, the primary subsystem includes a memory and a processor that detects operation of a first user-operated control and of a second user-operated control, which is physically apart from the video recorder, and the processor performs the method to accomplish pre-recording and event recording by the video recorder at a location of an event, the method comprising:

if pre-recording:

in response to detecting operation of the first user-operated control:

discontinuing receiving pre-recording video information to the memory;

saving the pre-recording video information stored in the memory; and

beginning event recording by saving event video information to the memory; and

in response to detecting operation of the second user-operated control, discontinuing capturing of the pre-recording video information;

if event recording:

in response to detecting operation of the first user-operated control:

discontinuing receiving the event video information to the memory; and

beginning receiving the pre-recording video information to the memory;

in response to detecting operation of the second user-operated control, discontinuing saving the event video information to the memory; and

if event recording is discontinued:

in response to detecting operation of the second user-operated control, continuing pre-recording by receiving the pre-recording video information to the memory; and

in response to detecting operation of the first user-operated control, beginning event recording by saving the event video information to the memory.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the primary subsystem further includes an indicator, the method further comprising:

controlling, by the processor, the indicator to indicate that event recording is discontinued.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the primary subsystem further includes a log, and the method further comprises recording in the log respective times of operation of the first user-operated control.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the primary subsystem further includes a log, and the method further comprises recording in the log respective times of operation of the second user-operated control.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprises:

when pre-recording, controlling, by the processor, the video recorder to capture video at a first resolution; and

when event recording, controlling, by the processor, the video recorder to capture the video at a second resolution greater than the first resolution.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the primary subsystem further includes an accelerometer, and the method further comprising: if pre-recording, in response to detecting acceleration by the accelerometer, discontinuing, by the processor, pre-recording and beginning event recording.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the processor further controls a display for reviewing recordings and the method further comprises if reviewing, in further response to detecting operation of the second user-operated control discontinuing reviewing and displaying a plurality of categories.

8. A system for controlling a video recorder of a primary subsystem to accomplish pre-recording and event recording at a location of an event, the system comprising:

the video recorder configured to be worn on a person at the location of the event;

a memory comprising a first portion for capturing pre-recording video information while pre-recording and a second portion for storing event video information during event recording, wherein the pre-recording video information captured in the first portion of the memory is continuously overwritten with new video information at a predetermined interval;

a processor;

a battery worn on the person to power the processor;

a first user-operated control worn on the person; and

a second user-operated control worn on the person and physically apart from the video recorder; wherein the processor is programmed to perform steps:

if pre-recording:

in response to detecting operation of the first user-operated control, the processor:

discontinues pre-recording;

stores the pre-recording video information outside of the first portion of the memory before it is overwritten at the predetermined interval; and

begins event recording by storing event video information in the second portion of the memory; and

in response to detecting operation of the second user-operated control, the processor, discontinues pre-recording;

if event recording:

in response to detecting operation of the first user-operated control, the processor:

discontinues event recording; and

begins pre-recording; and

in response to detecting operation of the second user-operated control, the processor discontinues event recording; and

if event recording is discontinued:

in response to detecting operation of the second user-operated control, the processor continues pre-recording; and

in response to detecting operation of the first user-operated control, the processor begins event recording.

9. The system of claim 8 further comprising an indicator, wherein the processor is programmed to control the indicator to indicate that event recording is discontinued.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the memory further comprises a log, wherein the processor is programmed to:

record in the log times of operation of the first user-operated control; and

record in the log supplemental information comprising contemporaneous annotations to the pre-recording video information provided through the primary subsystem while at the location of the event.

11. The system of claim 8 further comprising a log, wherein the processor is programmed to record in the log times of operation of the second user-operated control.

12. The system of claim 8 wherein:

when pre-recording, the processor is programmed to control the video recorder to record video at a first resolution; and

when event recording, the processor is programmed to control the video recorder to record the video at a second resolution greater than the first resolution.

13. The system of claim 8 , further comprising an accelerometer, wherein the processor is programmed to:

further detect acceleration measured by the accelerometer of the primary subsystem; and

when pre-recording, in response to detecting the acceleration, discontinue pre-recording and begin event recording.

14. The system of claim 8 wherein the processor is programmed to:

further control a display for reviewing recordings; and

if reviewing, in further response to detecting operation of the second user-operated control discontinue reviewing and display a plurality of categories.

15. The system of claim 8 , wherein the first portion of the memory comprises a pre-event circular buffer.

16. A body-worn camera system to accomplish pre-recording and event recording at a location of an event, the system comprising:

a computer processor;

a video recorder configured to be worn on a person at the location of the event;

a battery worn on the person, configured to supply electricity to the computer processor;

a first user-operated control worn on the person;

a second user-operated control worn on the person and physically apart from the video recorder; and

a memory comprising a pre-event circular buffer for storing pre-recording video information while pre-recording and a second portion for storing event video information during event recording, wherein the pre-event circular buffer is overwritten with new pre-recording video information once it is full, the memory further storing computer-executable instructions that, when executed by the computer processor, cause the computer processor to:

if pre-recording:

in response to detecting operation of the first user-operated control:

discontinue pre-recording;

store the pre-recording video information in the memory outside of the pre-event circular buffer before it is overwritten; and

begin event recording by storing event video information in the second portion of the memory; and

in response to detecting operation of the second user-operated control, discontinue pre-recording;

if event recording:

in response to detecting operation of the first user-operated control:

discontinue event recording; and

begin pre-recording; and

in response to detecting operation of the second user-operated control, discontinue event recording; and

if event recording is discontinued:

in response to detecting operation of the second user-operated control, continue pre-recording; and

in response to detecting operation of the first user-operated control, begin event recording.

17. The body-worn camera system of claim 16 , wherein the memory further comprises a log, wherein the computer processor is configured to record in the log at least one of:

times of operation of the first user-operated control; and

times of operation of the second user-operated control.

The body-worn camera system of claim 17 , further comprising a visual display capable of receiving, at the location of the event, user annotations about the pre-recording video information after displaying the pre-recording video information, wherein the memory further stores computer-executable instructions that, when executed by the computer processor, cause the computer processor to record the user annotations in the log.

19. The body-worn camera system of claim 16 , wherein the memory further stores computer-executable instructions that, when executed by the computer processor, cause the video recorder to:

if pre-recording, capture video at a first resolution; and

if event recording, capture the video at a second resolution greater than the first resolution.

The body-worn camera system of claim 16 , further comprising an accelerometer, wherein the memory further stores computer-executable instructions that, when executed by the computer processor, cause the computer processor to discontinue pre-recording and beginning event recording when acceleration is detected by the accelerometer while pre-recording.
