Abstract

Cataract surgery is in recent years more and more augmented and supported by the application of laser cuts in the eye tissue. Such laser systems are separate units from the phacoemulsification system units that are usually used for cataract extraction. The laser systems require the patient to be positioned under the laser unit and then being moved under the surgical microscope next to the phacoemulsification unit. The here described invention relates to systems combining several aspects of the laser system and the phacoemulsification system. In particular, this invention relates to combining at least some parts of the control system and the housing for both systems and thereby minimizing and optimizing setup time, operating room footprint, patient flow and cost. Furthermore the here disclosed invention relates to integrating the laser system under the surgical microscope and thereby significantly reducing the surgery setup and complexity.

Claims (20)

1. A femto-phaco system for performing two aspects of an eye surgery, wherein the first aspect is laser cutting of a tissue of the eye, and the second aspect is phacoemulsification of a lens tissue within the eye, the system comprising:

(a) a femtosecond laser system to cut the tissue of the eye with a laser beam;

(b) a phacoemulsification system to emulsify the lens tissue within the eye;

(c) a common control system to control surgical procedures of both the femtosecond laser system to cut the tissue of the eye with the laser beam; and the phacoemulsification system to emulsify the lens tissue within the eye;

(d) the common control system comprising a surgeon input interface that controls both:

(i) at least some parameters to operate the femtosecond laser system to cut the tissue of the eye with the laser beam, and,

(ii) at least some parameters to operate the phacoemulsification system to emulsify the lens;

(e) wherein at least a portion of the control system and, at least a portion of the femtosecond laser system are housed in a common housing with at least a portion of the phacoemulsification system; whereby the femtosecond laser system is integrated with the phacoemulsification system; and, thereby all the aspects of the surgical procedures are controlled by the femto-phaco system;

(f) wherein the femtosecond laser system includes a laser engine and a laser delivery system;

(g) wherein the femtosecond laser system also includes an arm having a proximal end and a distal end; and,

(h) wherein the proximal end of the arm is connected to the common housing, and the distal end of the arm is connected to the laser delivery system.

2. An integrated system for eye surgery, comprising:

(a) a femtosecond laser system to cut a tissue structure of an eye with a laser beam;

(b) a phacoemulsification system to emulsify a lens within a capsule of the eye;

(c) a control system integrated with the femtosecond laser system and the phacoemulsification system, having a surgeon input interface that controls both: (i) at least some parameters to operate the femtosecond laser system to cut a tissue structure of the eye; and (ii) at least some parameters to operate the phacoemulsification system to emulsify the lens;

(d) at least a portion of the femtosecond laser system being housed in a common housing with at least a portion of the phacoemulsification system; whereby the control system, the femtosecond laser system and the phacoemulsification system form the integrated system for eye surgery; thereby providing an integrated system configured to perform all aspects of the eye surgery;

(e) wherein the femtosecond laser system can be controlled to cut the tissue structure of the eye that includes lens capsule, limbal relaxing incisions, and corneal incisions;

(f) wherein the femtosecond laser system includes a laser engine and a laser delivery system;

(g) wherein the femtosecond laser system also includes an arm having a proximal end and a distal end; and,

(h) wherein the proximal end of the arm is connected to the common housing, and the distal end of the arm is connected to the laser delivery system.
