Abstract

A method for producing astaxanthin incorporates a method for producing astaxanthin-rich algae cells and a method for extracting astaxanthin therefrom. An initial feedstock comprises healthy algae, water, and nutrients. During a growth phase, carbon dioxide and light from a light source are supplied to the feedstock, thereby amplifying the algae. At least a portion of the nutrients remaining after amplification of the algae are separated from the amplified algae. During a stress phase, carbon dioxide and light are supplied to the amplified algae, thereby promoting production of astaxanthin by the amplified algae. The amplified algae and a cover are placed within an interior of an attrition mill having interior surfaces and media which are substantially non-reactive to astaxanthin and milled to release the astaxanthin from the algae. The cover limits oxidation of the released astaxanthin.

Claims (22)

1. A method for extracting a nutrient from nutrient-rich cells comprising:

combining a nutrient-rich cell biomass with ethanol under an inert gas in an interior of an attrition mill;

milling the nutrient-rich cell biomass in the ethanol and under the inert gas in the attrition mill;

breaking nutrient-rich cells of the nutrient-rich cell biomass; and

releasing a nutrient from the nutrient-rich cells to the ethanol,

where the ethanol and the inert gas limit oxidation of the nutrient, and

where the milling reduces the average grain size of the nutrient to less than three microns.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the nutrient is selected from the group consisting of astaxanthin, eicosapentaenoic acid, and docosahexaenoic acid.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the nutrient-rich cells are selected from the group consisting of algae, yeast, and bacteria.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein the nutrient-rich cells are Haematococcus pluvialis.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein the nutrient is astaxanthin.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising cooling the nutrient-rich cells during the milling.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the cooling the nutrient-rich cells during the milling includes cooling the attrition mill.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the nutrient is astaxanthin and the average grain size of the astaxanthin is reduced to approximately the size of a single astaxanthin molecule.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprising separating the ethanol from the nutrient.

10. The method of claim 1 further comprising prior to milling the nutrient-rich cell biomass in the ethanol and under the inert gas, supplying an additional ingredient to the interior of the attrition mill, the additional ingredient being selected from the group consisting of astaxanthin, eicosapentaenoic acid, and docosahexaenoic acid.

11. The method of claim 3 wherein the nutrient-rich cells are selected from the group consisting of Phaedactylum tricornutum, Spirulina, Chlorella, Nannochloropsis, Monodus subterraneus, Crypthecodinium cohnii, Schizochytrium, Thraustochytrium aggregatum , and Ulkenia sp.

12. The method of claim 3 wherein the nutrient-rich cells are Phaffia rhodozyma.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein the average grain size of the nutrient is reduced to less than 35 nm.

14. The method of claim 1 wherein the milling is conducted at a paddle speed of approximately 50 to 800 revolutions per minute.

15. The method of claim 1 wherein the media is selected from the group consisting of zirconia, alumina, and combinations thereof.

16. The method of claim 1 wherein the ethanol and the inert gas limit the oxidation of the nutrient to substantially no oxidation.
