Abstract

A printed energy storage device includes a first electrode, a second electrode, and a separator between the first and the second electrode. At least one of the first electrode, the second electrode, and the separator includes frustules, for example of diatoms. The frustules may have a uniform or substantially uniform property or attribute such as shape, dimension, and/or porosity. A property or attribute of the frustules can also be modified by applying or forming a surface modifying structure and/or material to a surface of the frustules. A membrane for an energy storage device includes frustules. An ink for a printed film includes frustules.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one common characteristic comprises at least one of a dimension, a shape, a material, and a degree of brokenness.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one common characteristic comprises a degree of brokenness, wherein extracting comprises extracting substantially unbroken diatom frustule portions from the dispersion, and wherein extracting the unbroken diatom frustule portions comprises:

circulating the dispersion through the disc stack centrifuge to provide an enriched phase comprising the substantially unbroken diatom frustule portions; and

circulating the enriched phase through the disc stack centrifuge to provide a further enriched phase comprising the substantially unbroken diatom frustule portions.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing a solid mixture comprising the plurality of diatom frustule portions.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the solid mixture comprises diatomaceous earth.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

dispersing a solid mixture comprising the plurality of diatom frustule portions in a dispersing solvent; and

removing from the dispersed solid mixture a non diatom frustule containing portion of the solid mixture.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising reducing a particle dimension of the solid mixture before dispersing the solid mixture comprising the plurality of diatom frustule portions in the dispersing solvent.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein reducing the particle dimension comprises grinding the solid mixture.

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein at least one of dispersing the solid mixture comprising the plurality of diatom frustule portions in the dispersing solvent and dispersing the plurality of diatom frustule portions in the surfactant comprises sonicating the plurality of diatom frustule portions.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising sorting the plurality of diatom frustule portions to separate a first diatom frustule portion from a second diatom frustule portion, wherein the first diatom frustule portion comprises a plurality of unbroken diatom frustule portions.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein sorting the plurality of diatom frustule portions comprises filtering the plurality of diatom frustule portions, wherein filtering the plurality of diatom frustule portions comprises applying a sieve to the plurality of diatom frustule portions.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein filtering the plurality of diatom frustule portions comprises disturbing agglomeration of the plurality of diatom frustule portions, wherein disturbing agglomeration of the plurality of diatom frustule portions comprises at least one of stirring, shaking, and bubbling.

13. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

washing the plurality of diatom frustule portions with a cleaning solvent after removing the at least one of the organic contaminant and the inorganic contaminant; and

removing the cleaning solvent, wherein removing the cleaning solvent comprises sedimenting the plurality of diatom frustule portions.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein sedimenting the plurality of diatom frustule portions comprises applying at least one of a decanter centrifuge and a tubular bowl centrifuge.

15. The method of claim 1 , further comprising dispersing the plurality of diatom frustule portions in an additive component, the additive component reducing agglomeration of the plurality of diatom frustule portions, the additive component comprising at least one of a potassium chloride, an ammonium chloride, an ammonium hydroxide, and a sodium hydroxide.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein dispersing the plurality of diatom frustule portions in the additive component is before dispersing the plurality of diatom frustule portions in the surfactant.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein dispersing the plurality of diatom frustule portions in the additive component is after dispersing the plurality of diatom frustule portions in the surfactant.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein dispersing the plurality of diatom frustule portions in the additive component is at least partially simultaneous with dispersing the plurality of diatom frustule portions in the surfactant.

19. The method of claim 1 , wherein removing the at least one of the organic contaminant and the inorganic contaminant from the plurality of diatom frustule portions comprises removing the organic contaminant from the plurality of diatom frustule portions.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein removing the organic contaminant from the plurality of diatom frustule portions comprises at least one of heating the plurality of diatom frustule portions in the presence of a bleach and annealing the plurality of diatom frustule portions.

21. The method of claim 1 , wherein removing the at least one of the organic contaminant and the inorganic contaminant from the plurality of diatom frustule portions comprises removing the inorganic contaminant from the plurality of diatom frustule portions, wherein removing the inorganic contaminant from the plurality of diatom frustule portions comprises combining the plurality of diatom frustule portions with at least one of a hydrochloric acid and a sulfuric acid.
