Abstract

A transparent, plastic, one-piece, tamper-resistant/evident container includes a cover portion including an outwardly extending peripheral flange and a base portion having an upper peripheral rim. A tamper-evident hinge joins the cover portion with the base portion. The hinge includes a frangible section. When the container is closed, the outwardly extending peripheral flange of the cover portion abuts the upper peripheral rim of the base portion and the upper peripheral rim of the base portion extends beyond an outer edge of the outwardly extending peripheral flange of the cover portion and deters opening the container.

The container as recited in claim 1 , wherein a skirt depends downwardly from the upper peripheral rim of the base portion, wherein the hinge extends from a lower edge of the skirt to the cover portion, and wherein the hinge has a dimensional height substantially equal to the dimensional height of the skirt.

9. The container as recited in claim 1 , wherein the base portion includes an upwardly projecting bead extending substantially about the perimeter of the upper peripheral rim, wherein the upwardly projecting bead surrounds the outer edge of the horizontally extending peripheral flange of the cover portion when the container is closed.

10. The container as recited in claim 1 , further comprising vents formed in at least one of the cover portion or the base portion to allow air to enter the container.

11. A transparent, plastic, one-piece, tamper-resistant/evident container comprising:

a base portion including an opening and an upper peripheral rim;

a cover portion including a horizontally extending peripheral flange with an outer edge extending substantially around the cover portion, wherein a perimeter of the outer edge of the horizontally extending peripheral flange is smaller than a perimeter of the opening of the base portion;

a hinge joining the cover portion with the base portion, the hinge including a frangible section;

a lock for maintaining the horizontally extending peripheral flange of the cover portion adjacent to the upper peripheral rim of the base portion when the container is closed; and

wherein, when the container is closed, the horizontally extending peripheral flange of the cover portion abuts the upper peripheral rim of the base portion, and

an outer peripheral edge of the upper peripheral rim of the base portion is positioned horizontally outward of the outer edge of the horizontally extending peripheral flange of the cover portion substantially but not completely around the perimeter of the container thereby restricting finger access to the horizontally extending peripheral flange of the cover and making the container tamper-resistant by deterring unauthorized opening of the container without first severing the frangible section of the hinge.

12. The container as recited in claim 11 , wherein a skirt depends downwardly from the upper peripheral rim of the base portion, wherein the hinge extends from a lower edge of the skirt to the cover portion.

13. The container as recited in claim 12 , wherein the cover portion, the base portion, the hinge and the skirt are thermoformed from a single sheet of material.

14. The container as recited in claim 11 , wherein the at least one line of weakness is a score line.

15. The container as recited in claim 11 , wherein the lock is non-permanent and facilitates the reattachment of the cover portion with the base portion.

16. The container as recited in claim 11 , wherein the lock is defined on a side of the container opposite from the hinge.

17. The container as recited in claim 11 , wherein the lock includes corresponding male and female engaging members.

18. The container as recited in claim 17 , wherein the male engaging member is on the base portion and the female engaging member is defined on the cover portion.

19. The container as recited in claim 17 , wherein the male engaging member extends from the base portion towards the cover portion when the container is closed.

20. The container as recited in claim 17 , wherein the female engaging member includes a receiving portion defined on the cover portion to correspond to the position of the male engaging member when the container is closed for receiving the male engaging member therein and forming a non-permanent engagement between the male and female engaging members when the container is closed.

21. The container as recited in claim 11 , wherein a skirt depends downwardly from the upper peripheral rim of the base portion, wherein the hinge extends from a lower edge of the skirt to the cover portion, and wherein the hinge has a dimensional height substantially equal to the dimensional height of the skirt.

22. The container as recited in claim 11 , wherein the base portion includes an upwardly projecting bead extending substantially about the perimeter of the upper peripheral rim, wherein the upwardly projecting bead surrounds the outer edge of the horizontally extending peripheral flange of the cover portion when the container is closed.

23. A transparent, plastic, one-piece, tamper-resistant/evident container comprising:

a base portion including an opening and an upper peripheral rim which includes an uppermost planar surface;

a circular cover portion including a horizontally extending peripheral flange with an outer edge extending substantially around the cover portion, wherein a perimeter of the outer edge of the horizontally extending peripheral flange is smaller than a perimeter of the opening of the base portion;
