Abstract

Rotational latency is reduced in a standard conventional form factor HDD system by replacing, for example—the prior art rotary arm actuator of a conventional HDD, with one or more belts and pulleys and one or more read/write heads mounted on, or otherwise associated with the belts. Multiple scaled iterations facilitate energy savings and power optimized systems, without compromise to data access performance.

Claims (34)

1. A data storage device comprising a belt, a pulley, a head gimbal assembly mounted to the belt, and a damper configured to dampen vibration.

2. The device of claim 1 wherein the damper comprises a tuned mass damper or an harmonic absorber.

3. The device of claim 1 wherein the damper is fixed to the belt.

4. The device of claim 1 wherein the damper is fixed to the pulley.

5. The device of claim 2 wherein the damper comprises an outer shell with a cavity containing a viscous fluid and a free-floating weight.

6. A data storage device comprising a belt, a pulley, a head gimbal assembly (HGA) mounted to the belt, and a sensor configured to sense vibration.

7. The device of claim 6 wherein the sensor comprises an accelerometer.

8. The device of claim 6 wherein the belt is tensioned around the pulley such that rotation of the pulley moves the head gimbal assembly, and wherein rotation of the pulley is controlled by a controller.

9. The device of claim 8 wherein the sensor is further configured to send a signal to the controller.

10. The device of claim 6 wherein the HGA comprises a read/write head, the device further comprising a second stage actuator configured to compensate for read/write head position errors due to vibration in the belt.

11. A data storage system, comprising:

a head gimbal assembly (HGA) mounted to a belt, the HGA comprising a read/write head, wherein the belt is configured to suspend the read/write head over a data recording surface and to move the read/write head across the data recording surface; and

a damper configured to dampen vibration.

12. The system of claim 11 wherein the damper comprises a tuned mass damper or an harmonic absorber.

13. The system of claim 11 wherein the damper is fixed to the belt.

14. The system of claim 11 wherein the damper is fixed to the pulley.

15. The system of claim 11 wherein the damper comprises an outer shell with a cavity containing a viscous fluid and a free-floating weight.

16. A data storage system, comprising:

a head gimbal assembly (HGA) mounted to a belt, the HGA comprising a read/write head, wherein the belt is configured to suspend the read/write head over a data recording surface and to move the read/write head across the data recording surface; and

a sensor configured to sense vibration.

17. The system of claim 16 wherein the sensor comprises an accelerometer.

18. The system of claim 16 wherein the belt is tensioned around a pulley such that rotation of the pulley moves the head gimbal assembly, and wherein rotation of the pulley is controlled by a controller.

19. The system of claim 18 wherein the sensor is further configured to send a signal to the controller.

20. The device of claim 16 further comprising a second stage actuator configured to compensate for read/write head position errors due to vibration in the belt.

21. A data storage device comprising a belt, a pulley, a head gimbal assembly attached to the belt using an angle bracket, and a damper configured to dampen vibration in the belt.

22. The device of claim 21 wherein the damper comprises a tuned mass damper or an harmonic absorber.

23. The device of claim 21 wherein the damper is fixed to the belt.

24. The device of claim 21 wherein the damper is fixed to the pulley.

25. The device of claim 21 wherein the damper comprises an outer shell with a cavity containing a viscous fluid and a free-floating weight.

26. A data storage device comprising a belt, a pulley, a head gimbal assembly (HGA) attached to the belt by an angle bracket, and a sensor configured to sense vibration in the belt.

27. The device of claim 26 wherein the sensor comprises an accelerometer.

28. The device of claim 26 wherein the belt is tensioned around the pulley such that rotation of the pulley moves the head gimbal assembly, and wherein rotation of the pulley is controlled by a controller.

29. The device of claim 28 wherein the sensor is further configured to send a signal to the controller.

30. The device of claim 26 wherein the HGA comprises a read/write head, the device further comprising a second stage actuator configured to compensate for read/write head position errors due to vibration in the belt.
