Abstract

The present invention relates to a method and a transcoder arrangement of transcoding a bitstream representing an original video source from an input format to an output format. The method comprises the steps of receiving (S 10 ) the bitstream with the input video format, wherein the input video format is a high fidelity format; and receiving (S 20 ) side information related to said video bitstream. Said side information comprising at least: a video bitstream representing the original video source with a low fidelity input video format, coding parameters optimized based on knowledge of the original video source; transform coefficients, indicative of a residual between the original video source and a decoded version of the high fidelity format. The method further comprises decoding (S 40 ) said received side information to generate transcoding guiding information, estimating (S 50 ) a representation of said bitstream with a low fidelity output format based on the received bit stream and the generated transcoding guiding information, adding (S 60 ) the transform coefficients of the side information to transform coefficients generated from the estimated representation of said bitstream with the low fidelity output format to improve the estimated representation of said bitstream with the low fidelity output format and encoding (S 50 ) the improved estimated representation of said bitstream with the low fidelity output format.

Claims (28)

1. A method for a transcoder arrangement of transcoding a bitstream representing an original video source from an input format to an output format, comprising

receiving the bitstream with the input video format, wherein the input video format is a high fidelity format;

receiving side information related to said video bitstream, said side information comprising at least: a video bitstream representing the original video source with a low fidelity input video format, coding parameters optimized based on knowledge of the original video source, and transform coefficients indicative of a residual between the original video source and a decoded version of the high fidelity format;

decoding said received side information to generate transcoding guiding information;

estimating a representation of said bitstream with a low fidelity output format, based on the received bit stream and the generated transcoding guiding information

adding the transform coefficients of the side information to transform coefficients generated from the estimated representation of said bitstream with the low fidelity output format, to improve the estimated representation of said bitstream with the low fidelity output format; and

encoding the improved estimated representation of said bitstream with the low fidelity output format.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the residual between the original video source and a decoded version of the high fidelity format is a quantized residual.

3. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising decoding said received video bitstream to provide pixel data as said representation of said received video bitstream.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said side information further comprises residual information related to said input video format.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said side information is received separately from said video bitstream.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said side information is received together with said video bitstream.

7. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising identifying an indication about the presence of said side information within said video bitstream.

8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said input video format and said output video format comprise different color representations of a video, or different video codecs.

9. A transcoder arrangement for transcoding a bitstream representing an original video source from an input format to an output format, wherein said transcoder arrangement is configured to

receive the bitstream with the input video format, wherein the input video format is a high fidelity format;

receive side information related to said video bitstream, said side information comprising at least: a video bitstream representing the original video source with a low fidelity input video format, coding parameters optimized based on knowledge of the original video source, and transform coefficients indicative of a residual between the original video source and a decoded version of the high fidelity format;

decode said received side information to generate transcoding guiding information;

estimate a representation of said bitstream with a low fidelity output format, based on the received bit stream and the generated transcoding guiding information;

add the transform coefficients of the side information to transform coefficients generated from the estimated representation of said bitstream with the low fidelity output format to improve the estimated representation of said bitstream with the low fidelity output format; and

encode the improved estimated representation of said bitstream with the low fidelity output format.

10. The transcoder arrangement according to claim 9 , wherein the residual between the original video source and a decoded version of the high fidelity format is a quantized residual.

11. The transcoder arrangement according to claim 9 , wherein the transcoder arrangement is further configured to decode said received video bitstream, to provide pixel data as said representation of said received video bitstream.

12. The transcoder arrangement according to claim 9 , wherein said side information further comprises residual information related to said input video format.

13. The transcoder arrangement according to claim 9 , wherein the transcoder arrangement is configured to receive said side information separately from said video bitstream.

14. The transcoder arrangement according to claim 9 , wherein the transcoder arrangement is configured to receive said side information together with said video bitstream.

15. The transcoder arrangement according to claim 9 , wherein the transcoder arrangement is configured to identify an indication about the presence of said side information within said video bitstream.

16. The transcoder arrangement according to claim 9 , wherein said input video format and said output video format comprise different color representations of a video, or different video codecs.
