Abstract

A resorbable screw fastener and a method of firing with an applicator capable of applying a surgical fastener to tissue in order to form tissue connection to secure objects to tissue, the fastener including a body portion having a helical thread, a head portion disposed at the proximal end of the body portion. The resorbable screw fastener is 100% resorbed in vivo during a period of time ranging from about 14 days to about one year after implantation.

Claims (27)

1. A resorbable screw fastener, comprising:

a body portion defining a longitudinal axis, the body portion including:

a helical thread formed thereon, the helical thread having an outer diameter defining at least one planar surface extending in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the body portion; and

a cylindrical head portion extending from the body portion and defining a longitudinal axis, the cylindrical head portion including an outer radial surface having at least one planar surface, wherein the at least one planar surface of the cylindrical head portion is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the body portion, and wherein the at least one planar surface of the cylindrical head portion is in radial registration with the at least one planar surface of the outer diameter of the helical thread.

2. The resorbable screw fastener of claim 1 , wherein the cylindrical head portion further includes at least one slot formed in the outer radial surface of the cylindrical head portion, the at least one slot is a driver receiving structure being configured for receiving both a linear and a rotational force.

3. The resorbable screw fastener of claim 2 , wherein the at least one slot is in registration with the at least one planar surface.

4. The resorbable screw fastener of claim 2 , wherein the at least one slot defines an outer radial surface, wherein the outer radial surface of the at least one slot is angled relative to the longitudinal axis of the body portion.

5. The resorbable screw fastener of claim 1 , wherein the body portion includes a center shaft that is tapered along the longitudinal axis of the body portion from a narrow distal end to a larger proximal end.

6. The resorbable screw fastener of claim 5 , wherein the helical thread extends from the center shaft of the body portion and includes a plurality of turns, and wherein the at least one planar surface of the helical thread is provided on more than one turn of the helical thread.

7. The resorbable screw fastener of claim 6 , wherein the helical thread includes at least one land, the at least one land being perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the body portion.

8. The resorbable screw fastener of claim 1 , wherein the body portion includes a center lumen extending along the longitudinal axis of the body portion through an entire length of the body portion.

9. The resorbable screw fastener of claim 1 , wherein the body portion includes a proximal end and a distal end, wherein the distal end of the body portion is blunt.

10. The resorbable screw fastener of claim 9 , wherein the distal end of the body portion defines a distal surface extending non-perpendicularly relative to the longitudinal axis of the body portion.

11. The resorbable screw fastener of claim 1 , wherein a diameter of the cylindrical head portion is approximately 3.8 mm.

12. The resorbable screw fastener of claim 1 , wherein a height of the cylindrical head portion is approximately 1.5 mm.

13. The resorbable screw fastener of claim 1 , wherein a length of the body portion is approximately 5 mm.

14. The resorbable screw fastener of claim 1 , wherein the at least one planar surface of the cylindrical head portion includes at least one pair of diametrically opposed planar surfaces, wherein each of the at least one pair of diametrically opposed planar surfaces is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the body portion.

15. A resorbable screw fastener, comprising:

a body portion defining a longitudinal axis, the body portion including:

a helical thread formed thereon, the helical thread having an outer diameter defining at least one planar surface extending in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the body portion; and

a cylindrical head portion extending from the body portion and defining a longitudinal axis between a distal end and a proximal end thereof, the cylindrical head portion including an outer radial surface having at least one planar surface extending partially between the distal end and the proximal end of the cylindrical head portion, wherein the at least one planar surface of the cylindrical head portion is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the body portion, and wherein the at least one planar surface of the cylindrical head portion is in radial registration with the at least one planar surface of the outer diameter of the helical thread.

16. The resorbable screw fastener of claim 15 , wherein the cylindrical head portion further includes at least one slot formed in the outer radial surface of the cylindrical head portion, the at least one slot extending partially between the proximal end and the distal end of the cylindrical head portion, wherein the at least one slot is a driver receiving structure being configured for receiving both a linear and a rotational force.

17. The resorbable screw fastener of claim of claim 16 , wherein the at least one slot of the cylindrical head portion is tapered at an angle toward the longitudinal axis of the body portion.

18. The resorbable screw fastener of claim 15 , wherein the helical thread extends from the center shaft of the body portion and includes a plurality of turns, and wherein the at least one planar surface of the helical thread is provided on more than one turn of the helical thread.

19. The resorbable screw fastener of claim 15 , wherein the at least one planar surface of the outer radial surface of the cylindrical head includes a plurality of planar surfaces formed in the outer radial surface thereof.

20. The resorbable screw fastener of claim 16 , wherein the at least one slot formed in the outer radial surface of the cylindrical head portion includes a plurality of slots formed in the outer radial surface thereof.

21. The resorbable screw fastener of claim 15 , wherein the resorbable screw fastener is formed from a bioresorbable polymer.
