Abstract

A recreational vehicle is provided including a power source, such as an engine or an electric motor, and a transmission having a variable gear ratio. A sub-transmission coupled to an output of the transmission includes a plurality of selectable gear configurations including park gear and at least one of a forward gear, a neutral gear and a reverse gear. An electronic controller is operative to electronically control the gear configuration of the sub-transmission in response to a set of conditions.

an actuator operative to change the gear setting of the sub-transmission;

a shifter including a signal output operative to provide a shift request signal indicative of a request to change the gear setting of the sub-transmission;

at least one sensor configured to detect at least one first speed value selected from a group of a ground speed of the vehicle and a speed of a component of the vehicle; and

a controller including a processor, the controller being in communication with the actuator, the at least one sensor, and the shifter, wherein the controller controls the actuator to set the gear setting to the park gear setting in response to determining that all of a first set of park condition signals are satisfied, wherein the first set of park condition signals comprise: the ignition being in the off-state, the sub-transmission having a gear setting other than the park gear setting and the at least one sensor indicating that the first speed value is at or below a threshold.

2. The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the threshold is zero.

3. The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the speed of a component of the vehicle is a speed of at least one of the power source, the transmission, the ground engaging member, a flywheel of the power source, a drive shaft connecting the transmission to the ground engaging member, and a propeller shaft connecting the transmission to the ground engaging member.

4. The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the at least one sensor comprises two sensors and wherein a first sensor of the two sensors detects the first speed value and the second sensor of the two sensors performs a redundancy check of the first sensor.

5. The vehicle of claim 1 , further comprising a shift sensor in communication with the sub-transmission, the shift sensor configured to verify the gear setting of the sub-transmission.

6. The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the controller controls the actuator to set the gear setting to the park gear setting in response to a second set of park condition signals, wherein the second set of park condition signals comprise: the ignition being in the off-state for at least a threshold amount of time and the sub-transmission having a gear setting other than the park gear setting.

7. The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the speed of a component of the vehicle comprises a speed of the power source and a speed of the ground engaging member and wherein the controller controls the actuator to set the gear setting to a target gear setting in response to a shift request for the target gear setting when the speed of the power source and the speed of the ground engaging member are within a first range and wherein the controller controls the actuator to cause the gear setting to remain in a current gear setting in response to a shift request for the requested gear setting when at least one of the speed of the power source and the speed of the ground engaging member are not within the first range.

8. The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the sub-transmission comprises a shift drum, a first shift sensor that detects at least one of a position of the shift drum and a position of the shifter and further wherein the controller is a proportional-integral-derivative controller that determines a position of the shift drum responsive to a signal received from the first shift sensor.

9. The vehicle of claim 8 , further comprising a second sensor operable to perform a redundancy check on the first sensor.

10. The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the controller is placed in an off state in response to the ignition being in the off-state for at least a threshold amount of time.

11. A method of operating a recreational vehicle including:

providing a controller for the recreational vehicle;

receiving, at the controller, an indication of a vehicle ignition being in one of an on-state and an off-state;

receiving, at the controller, an indication of a sub-transmission setting selected from the group including a park gear setting and at least one of a forward gear setting, a reverse gear setting and a neutral gear setting;

receiving, at the controller, an indication of at least one first speed value selected from a group of a ground speed of the vehicle and a speed of a component of the vehicle; and

emitting, by the controller, a signal to place the sub-transmission in a park setting when all of a first set of park conditions are satisfied, the first set of park conditions including:

1 ) the ignition being in the off state,

2 ) the sub-transmission having a gear setting other than the park gear setting; and

3 ) the first speed value being at or below a threshold.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the threshold is zero.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the speed of a component of the vehicle is a speed of at least one of a power source, a transmission, a ground engaging member, a flywheel of the power source, a drive shaft connecting the transmission to the ground engaging member, and a propeller shaft connecting the transmission to the ground engaging member.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein receiving an indication of at least one first speed value selected includes receiving an indication from a first sensor that detects the first speed value and receiving an indication from a second sensor that performs a redundancy check of the first sensor.

15. The method of claim 11 , further comprising receiving a signal from a shift sensor in communication with the sub-transmission, the shift sensor signal operable to verify the gear setting of the sub-transmission.

16. The method of claim 11 , further including emitting a signal to control an actuator to set the gear setting to the park gear setting in response to a second set of park condition signals, wherein the second set of park condition signals comprise:
